Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has traded one of Boston's pitching prospects to the Cardinals.

The Boston Red Sox have been one of baseball’s most disappointing teams so far this season. After entering the season with high expectations, the Red Sox currently have a 15-21 record and are last in the American League East standings. They also trail the first-place New York Yankees by 10 games, so it has been an incredibly frustrating start to the 2026 campaign for the Red Sox.

Hope is not lost for the Red Sox, though, as they are just two games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild card spot in the American League. With this, they could improve their playoff odds if they got hot. However, at this point in the season, they have yet to.

With how this season has gone for the Red Sox, they should not be afraid to add to their roster. This is especially so if a potential addition would benefit them beyond this season. It is clear that they have multiple needs that they must address if they hope to get their season back on track.

Due to this, the Red Sox are now being urged to strike a deal for one of baseball’s top trade candidates.

Red Sox Urged to Make Serious Push for Astros Star Yordan Alvarez

In a recent article for FanSided, Chris Landers named potential landing spots for each of baseball’s top trade candidates at this point in the season. With the Houston Astros having a nightmare start to the 2026 season, Yordan Alvarez made the cut.

When it came to Alvarez, Landers urged the Red Sox to make a big push for the star slugger.

“If Alvarez is available, Boston would pretty much have to make a serious run at him. He’s exactly the sort of big bopper this lineup desperately needs, and he’s under team control through 2028 on a pretty affordable deal,” Landers wrote.

When looking at the Red Sox’s roster, there is no question that Alvarez would be a major addition to their group. He would slot perfectly in the middle of their lineup and would undoubtedly help their offense in a major way.

Alvarez’s stats this season show just how impactful he is capable of being. In 37 games so far this season with the Astros, he has 12 home runs, 27 RBIs, and a .324 batting average. With numbers like these, he is a threat with both his contact and power. This would make him a huge pickup for the Red Sox if they successfully landed him.

The Red Sox Need to be Watched on the Trade Market

With how this season has gone for the Red Sox, they are certainly a team to keep an eye as we continue to get closer to the trade deadline. It would not be surprising if they looked to add players who would be more than rentals. It’s why Alvarez stands out as a prime potential target for them.

Yet, at the same time, players on expiring deals could also be trade candidates for the Red Sox this season. With this, the Red Sox could be a busy team between now and this year’s deadline.
