Former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Shelby Harris, one of the veterans Seattle acquired in the blockbuster Russell Wilson trade, is reportedly headed to the New York Giants.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, the Giants have agreed to terms with Harris as they continue adding help to their defensive line. The New York Post reported that Harris is signing a one-year deal with the Giants as part of New York’s effort to rebuild the position after trading Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals earlier in April.

For Seahawks fans, the move is less about what Harris does for New York and more about where his name sits in Seattle history. Harris was one of the players included in the 2022 trade that sent Wilson and a fourth-round pick to the Denver Broncos. Seattle officially announced at the time that its return included Harris, quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a fifth-round pick.

Harris’ Seahawks stay lasted only one season, but his connection to that trade keeps him attached to the franchise’s biggest roster reset of the modern era.

The expectation is the Giants will sign DL Shelby Harris, per source. A veteran added to the mix. Might not be done either.

Shelby Harris Was Part of the Seahawks’ Russell Wilson Trade Return

Harris arrived in Seattle as a useful veteran piece rather than the centerpiece of the Wilson deal. The draft picks became the long-term focus of the trade, while Harris gave the Seahawks an experienced defensive lineman for the first season of the post-Wilson era.

The Seahawks did not keep Harris long term, but he was productive during his brief stop in Seattle. He later continued his career with the Cleveland Browns, where he played three seasons before reaching free agency.

Harris had 32 tackles and 1 sack in 17 games with Cleveland last season. Harris played 509 defensive snaps for the Browns in 2025 and added four passes defensed.

That profile explains why the Giants would still be interested. Harris is not being added as a franchise-changing interior defender. He is a veteran rotational lineman with durability, experience and the ability to help a defensive front that needed more bodies after the draft.

Giants Add Harris After Dexter Lawrence Trade

The Giants’ need up front became more urgent after they traded Lawrence to the Bengals earlier this month. New York did add Auburn defensive tackle Bobby Jamison-Travis in the sixth round of the 2026 NFL draft, but the roster still needed more veteran help.

Harris joins a group that includes Roy Robertson-Harris, Sam Roberts, Darius Alexander and Elijah Chatman, according to Alper. The New York Post also reported that the Giants have been considering additional veteran options, including D.J. Reader and Calais Campbell.

That makes Harris’ signing part of a broader plan rather than a one-player answer. Replacing Lawrence’s impact with one move was never realistic. The Giants appear to be trying to patch the position with a mix of veterans, young players and late-draft depth.

For Harris, it is another chance to extend a long NFL career that has already taken him from the Raiders to the Broncos, Seahawks, Browns and now reportedly the Giants.

Harris’ Seahawks Tenure Was Short, but the Trade Still Looms Large

Harris’ Seahawks chapter is easy to overlook because it came and went quickly. He was not in Seattle long enough to become a foundational player, and the Wilson trade is now remembered more for the picks and the direction it set for both franchises.

Still, his inclusion in the deal matters to Seahawks fans because it is part of the full trade tree. Seattle did not just move Wilson for draft capital. The Seahawks also took back veterans who helped bridge the roster into a new era.

Harris was one of those bridge players.

Now, four years after the trade was officially announced, Harris is still finding NFL work while the Wilson deal remains one of the defining transactions in Seahawks history. His reported Giants agreement is a small piece of NFL news, but it is also a reminder of how far the pieces of that trade have scattered since Seattle made its franchise-altering decision.
