Kentucky Derby Contenders to Watch as Renegade, So Happy Lead Wide-Open Field

The 2026 Kentucky Derby arrives without a clear favorite, creating one of the most unpredictable fields in recent years. Four horses opened at odds of 10-1 or lower on the morning line, with Renegade listed as the 4-1 favorite despite drawing the No. 1 post position — historically a difficult spot to win from, via Sportsline.

The 2026 Kentucky Derby features a competitive lineup of 20 three-year-old horses set to run the 1¼-mile race at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, with a $5 million purse on the line.

Kentucky Derby Favorites Include Renegade, Commandment, Further Ado

Renegade heads into the race as the 4-1 morning-line favorite, with Irad Ortiz Jr. set to ride for trainer Todd Pletcher. The colt runs for owners Robert and Lawana Low along with Repole Stable. Even before landing the inside post, Renegade was seen as a relatively soft favorite in a wide-open field.

Commandment and Further Ado were listed as co-second choices at 6-1. Commandment, trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Luis Saez, finished atop the Derby qualifying leaderboard with 150 points. After placing fourth in his debut at Keeneland last October, the colt won four consecutive races.

Commandment’s off-the-pace running style could fit well in a race expected to feature early speed, though he will have a new jockey after his previous riders opted for other mounts.

Further Ado, also trained by Cox and ridden by John Velazquez, enters with similar expectations. However, betting trends indicate both horses could drift slightly as money shifts toward other contenders.

Chief Wallabee, listed at 8-1, brings a connection to trainer William Mott, who won last year’s Derby with Sovereignty. Despite that background, Chief Wallabee has just one career win.

So Happy, Emerging Market Gain Momentum Among Bettors

Several horses have gained traction with bettors in the days leading up to the race, including So Happy and Emerging Market.

So Happy, trained by Mark Glatt and ridden by Mike Smith, opened at 15-1 but has drawn attention following a win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. The colt’s recent form, combined with Smith’s experience, has made him a notable contender.

Glatt said after that Santa Anita victory, “[Dena] got that horse there today,” referencing his late wife.

Smith, who turned 60 last summer, has ridden So Happy in all four starts, winning three times. His experience in major races adds to the horse’s profile.

Emerging Market (15-1), trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Flavien Prat, has also generated interest due to his price and potential upside. Incredibolt (20-1) is another horse drawing attention as a possible contender.

The Puma, originally listed at 10-1, was scratched Saturday morning, changing the betting landscape shortly before post time.

Long Shots Danon Bourbon, Golden Tempo Offer Value

Among the long shots, Danon Bourbon (20-1) stands out as an undefeated entrant from Japan. The colt has won all three starts by a combined margin of 18½ lengths, including a record-setting performance in the Fukuryu Stakes.

Japanese-bred horses have yet to win the Kentucky Derby, a trend that continues to draw attention each year.

Golden Tempo (30-1) is another long shot to watch. The horse typically runs from the back of the pack, a style that could benefit from a fast early pace. While the outside post presents a challenge, it may not significantly impact a deep closer.

Both Danon Bourbon and Golden Tempo present potential value for bettors seeking higher payouts in a competitive field.

What To Know About The 152nd Kentucky Derby Race Details

The 152nd Kentucky Derby will take place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The race features 20 three-year-old horses competing over a distance of 1¼ miles for a $5 million purse.

Weather conditions are expected to be favorable, with partly cloudy skies and no significant chance of rain.

Coverage begins at noon ET on Peacock and NBCSN, before shifting to NBC at 2:30 p.m. ET. Telemundo Deportes will also broadcast the race beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET on Universo, with streaming available on the Telemundo app.

Post time for the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for 6:57 p.m. ET.
