Real Madrid CF hosted Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday night in a La Liga Matchday 36 clash. Although the title race had already been decided after FC Barcelona secured the championship, Real Madrid vs Real Oviedo still attracted attention because of the quality on display and the final weeks of the season.
Real Madrid entered the match in second place with 77 points, while Oviedo arrived at the bottom of the table and was already relegated from La Liga. Even with limited stakes, the atmosphere around this Real Madrid vs Real Oviedo encounter remained strong at the Bernabéu.
The buildup to Real Madrid vs Real Oviedo focused largely on squad rotation, returning players, and Real Madrid’s response after missing out on the league title. The reverse fixture earlier in the season ended in a comfortable 3–0 win for Madrid, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice and Vinícius Júnior adding another goal.
Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa welcomed Mbappé back into the squad for the match. However, several players remained unavailable, including Dani Carvajal, Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, Éder Militão, Arda Güler, and Federico Valverde.
Real Madrid CF manager Álvaro Arbeloa entered the match with several selection concerns as the season approached its conclusion.
One of the biggest talking points involved Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde following reports of a heated training-ground altercation after the defeat to FC Barcelona. Tchouaméni remained available and was expected to feature, while Valverde was rested and left out of the matchday squad.
There was better news for Madrid in attack as Kylian Mbappé returned to the squad after missing recent training sessions. He was expected to rejoin Vinícius Júnior in the frontline.
Real Madrid still faced a lengthy injury list in defense. Dani Carvajal, Ferland Mendy, David Alaba, and Éder Militão all remained unavailable with long-term injuries. Arda Güler also stayed sidelined.
For Real Oviedo, interim coach Javier Calleja dealt with multiple suspensions after the club’s relegation was confirmed.
Midfielder Kwasi Sibo and defender Javi López were both suspended after receiving red cards against Getafe CF.
In the attack, Borja Bastón remained unavailable with a muscular injury, increasing pressure on Federico Viñas to provide goals for the visitors.
