Lane Kiffin's LSU Tigers dealt bad news on coveted playmaker.

The LSU Tigers currently rank 10th in Rivals 2027 Team Recruiting Rankings. They have added five recruits from the class, which includes two five stars and three four stars. However, their pursuit to add another coveted playmaker isn’t looking that good.

Matthew Gregory, a 2027 wide receiver from Owen J. Roberts in Pottstown, Pa., carries a $125,000 NIL valuation per Rivals, and the latest recruiting movement has Nebraska clearly in the driver’s seat.

“Going into summer, I like where the Huskers stand and have moved my Rivals Prediction Machine forecast to reflect that,” Steve Wiltfong on On3 wrote. “Potential position coach Daikiel Shorts has been leading the charge in this recruitment.”

Gregory’s official visits are now lined up for UCLA on May 29, then LSU, Virginia Tech and Nebraska on June 19, with the Huskers getting the final stop.

That visit order is the bad news for head coach Lane Kiffin’s camp. In recruiting, the last official visit often carries real weight, especially when the race is already narrowing. Nebraska’s staff has the final chance to make its case before Gregory decides and On3’s current prediction percentage(91.7%) gives the Huskers a massive edge over the rest of the field.

LSU’s Receiver Pitch Still has Work to Do

LSU made an offer to Gregory in the month of February. That offer made LSU part of a national battle, but the Tigers have not been able to seize control since. Gregory’s stock has continued to rise and the competition has only hardened as visits were finalized.

The challenge for LSU is not just Gregory. The Tigers are still rebuilding the wide receiver room under Kiffin and LSU returned only one receiver from the 2025 roster. The staff brought in nine transfers and three high school signees, leaving the position group open but unsettled.

That is the kind of depth-chart uncertainty that makes it harder to sell a prep receiver on immediate clarity, even at a program with LSU’s brand power.

The Tigers still have advantages that few programs can match. LSU has produced elite NFL receivers at a historic rate, including Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr.
