Bristol’s economy in the 19th century was driven by its bustling docks, which facilitated trade with the British Empire. The construction of the Great Western Railway in the 1840s connected Bristol to London, further boosting its economic significance. Philanthropists and reformers, such as Mary Carpenter, worked to improve education and welfare for the poor.
