Diego Luna is letting down his hair for Tangled, Walt Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 2010 animated movie.

Luna has joined the project in a role created specifically for the feature, which goes before cameras in Spain in June.

Australian actress Teagan Croft and Zombies star Milo Manheim lead Tangled, respectively playing Rapunzel, the curious and plucky would-be princess with magical hair, and Flynn Rider, the cocky outlaw thief who helps her escape her tower prison. The two nabbed the roles after a search on both sides of the Atlantic in December.

Also on the call sheet is Kathryn Hahn, hailed for her recent works in Agatha All Along and The Studio, and who is playing the duplicitous Mother Gothel.

Michael Gracey, who counts the musical biopics Better Man and The Greatest Showman among his credits, is directing the feature, which, like the original, will have big musical elements.

It is unclear whether Luna, as part of the new role, will be required to sing as details on the live-action take are being kept in the castle. The original animated film grossed over $591 million and spawned a popular Disney Channel series.

Kristin Burr, who was a producer on last summer’s Freakier Friday as well as 2021’s live-action Cruella, is producing via her Burr! Productions.

The script is by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (I Know What You Did Last SummerThor: Love and Thunder) and Michael Montemayor (Everyone I Know is Dead).

Exec vp of production Jessica Virtue is overseeing the project for Disney Live Action.

Luna is already part of the Disney family thanks for his acclaimed starring turn as the titular character in Andor, the equally-acclaimed Star Wars series created by Tony Gilroy. His work on the show, based on the Star Wars movie Rogue One, earned him nominations for Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.

Luna’s next big outing will be Ashes (Ceniza en la boca), a drama he directed and co-wrote that adapts the Spanish-language novel. The movie will premiere May 13 at the Cannes Film Festival. He also stars in Netflix’s Mexico 86, which tells the true story of Martin de la Torre, the cunning bureaucrat who negotiated Mexico’s hosting of the 1986 World Cup.

Luna is repped by WME.
