A year after Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers brought their Las Culturistas Culture Awards to Bravo — and gave the internet the gift of Ben Platt covering Addison Rae’s “Diet Pepsi” — the comedic duo are back to hand out more honors.

The show, which taped in downtown Los Angeles on May 30 ahead of its June 17 air date, includes categories like “Hilary Duff Award for Millennial Excellence,” “Top Fact About Greta Gerwig That You May Not Know,” “Best Vibe, Hands Down,” “Hunger Games Award for Best Huge Franchise” “Real Housewife Award for Best Way to Start a Confrontation” and “Best Picture — Literal Picture,” and is an off-shoot of the pair’s hit Las Culturistas podcast.

On the red carpet before taping the show, Rogers admitted that last year — airing on broadcast for the first time after doing the show on a smaller scale in New York for several years — “we were so panicked about whether or not it could happen, we forgot to enjoy it a little bit,” as they were not certain they could actually pull off all the musical numbers and surprise bits they had planned.

Yang added, “I think we’re really steady this time, and I think that just means that we walked the crucible of year one. I think there are things about tonight and this year that I think will certainly outdo last year.” And since the two choose the nominations and winners themselves, they say they are now getting actively campaigned by those looking to win.

“Some of the campaigns have been incredible, and guess what, they work! Who knew we could be bought?” joked Rogers as Yang chimed in, “Everybody knew.” Rogers responded, “and that makes us just like every other award show,” before teasing, “I never said that.”

A star-studded group of nominees and presenters — many hailing from the worlds of SNL or Bravo — also hit the carpet before the show, welcoming Will Ferrell (who exec produces Las Culturistas), RuPaul, Hacks‘ Hannah Einbinder, Meg Stalter and Paul W. Downs, Aidy Bryant, Sarah Sherman, Mandy Moore, Rachel Zegler, Ciara Miller, Paige Desorbo, Hannah Berner, Heated Rivalry‘s Francois Arnaud and Lisa Rinna.

Einbinder, nominated for “The All Good Either Way Award for Bisexuality in Media,” joked that this honor was “the most meaningful” of all her Hacks accolades,” and as a frequent attendee of shows like the Emmys and Golden Globes, what should those traditional ceremonies take from the Culture Awards?

“That gay people should be in charge,” she declared, while Joel Kim Booster — a longtime friend of Yang and Rogers — said they should learn to “Be funny again, I think that’s a big one. There are so many jokes per minute in this show that it’s sort of like exhausting sometimes to watch; I’m like out of breath watching because there’s so many jokes. And I think that’s the big thing — stop trying to appeal to an audience that does not care about awards shows, and start writing towards the people that actually do care and want to watch it.”

D’Arcy Carden, who appeared as a presenter, added, “We take it too seriously in the real world — when the traditional award shows take themselves too seriously, I think we’re collectively like, ‘What the hell are we doing? Let’s have a little fun.’ And, of course, it’s wonderful to honor people for their great work and I love that, but it’s like we’re playing fun pretend here — let’s lean into that. But they take it seriously, Matt and Bowen, they go all out. It’s not half-assed, it’s like a full-on show that is just silly, dumb times.”

The Las Culturistas Culture Awards airs simultaneously on Bravo and Peacock on Wednesday night.
