Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino Back for ‘Romy and Michele’ ...

Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow’s comeback as Romy and Michele is officially a go — and headed straight to streaming.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the 20th Century Studios sequel to 1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion started shooting Friday and is now in production in Los Angeles with filmmaker Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) at the helm. But unlike the first installment, which hit the big screen as a theatrical release, the sequel will stream exclusively as a Hulu Original on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. or on Disney+ internationally.

The original, penned by Robin Schiff and directed by David Mirkin, cast Sorvino and Kudrow as Romy and Michele, two inseparable airheads who hit the road to attend their 10th high school reunion with a plan to lie about their successful careers to impress their classmates. Schiff, whose credits include Emily in Paris and Grosse Pointe, also wrote the sequel which brings back some of the original stars along with a new group of actors to join the party.

Back are Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Alan Cumming as Sandy Frink, Camryn Manheim as Toby and Julia Campbell as Christie. They’ll be joined by Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton and Nathan Lee Graham. Their roles are being kept under wraps as is the plot of the new film.

Federle is also producing along with veteran producer Laurence Mark, who produced 1997’s Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. The executive producer team includes Barry Kemp (an exec producer on the original), Sorvino, Kudrow and Schiff. Kimberly McCullough is set as a co-producer.

Rounding out the creative team are director of photography Marco Fargnoli, production designer Hillary Gurtler, editor Brian Olds and costume designer Mona May, the latter of whom put her stylish stamp on the beloved original after a culture shifting gig on 1995’s Clueless. For 20th Century Studios, senior vp Sarah Shepard is overseeing the project.

The original film, a Touchstone Pictures production released by Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures, was considered a (barely) modest success by earning $29 million when it was released in April 1997. But like so many comedies of that era, it found new life in pop culture by becoming a cult classic. It currently streams on Hulu. Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for years, and that fever heated up after Sorvino and Kudrow reunited to present a trophy at the SAG Awards in 2022.

But it wasn’t until January 2025 that it was reported that Sorvino and Kudrow were in final talks for a sequel with Federle on board. While making the rounds for the final season of The Comeback, Kudrow has been hinting that it was inching ever closer. During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Kudrow, who previously worked with Federle on the Disney offering Better Nate Than Ever, said “there’s a really funny script, and things are kind of moving toward it.”

Federle is represented by CAA. Oscar winner Sorvino, who recently starred in the series Shining Vale opposite Courteney Cox, is repped by Independent Artist Group and Circle Management + Production. Kudrow, who just closed out a notable run as the star, executive producer and co-writer of The Comeback, is repped by CAA, Viewpoint and Gochman Law Group.

Garofalo, who has a voice role in the new animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, is repped by Gersh Agency, Independent Artist Media and Kara Welker; The Traitors star Cumming by UTA and Bond Artist Management; The Practice star Manheim by Innovative Artists and Framework Entertainment; and Rose Red star Campbell by Innovative Artists.

Key, who most recently starred in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Only Murders in the Building, is represented by CAA, Range Media Partners, Brecheen Feldman Breimer Silver Thompson and Origin Public Relations. Huebel, whose recent credits include Five Star Weekend, Running Point and The Descendants, is repped by Haven Entertainment, Innovative Artists and Karl Austen.

Clueless and Road Trip star Meyer hails from Independent Artist Group and Zero Gravity Management. Warburton, whose long list of credits includes Bee Movie, Seinfeld and Family Guy, is repped by Gersh Agency and Strand Entertainment. Mid-Century Modern and Theater Camp star Graham is repped by CGF Talent and Industry Entertainment. Schiff is repped by WME and manager Stacey Lubliner at SEL Media Group.
