Along with the titular stars of The Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s a surprising new addition to the big screen Star Wars story — Jeremy Allen White as Jabba the Hutt’s son Rotta the Hut.

Yes, The Bear heartthrob is playing the offspring of the giant slug-like gangster, but in a nod to his good looks, he’s not just any Hutt. Rotta is a gladiator and while he’s got the slug body, he’s a much more muscular version than his late father. Rotta comes into play when the New Republic enlists Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu to rescue him in exchange for information from the Hutt clan.

At the Los Angeles premiere on Thursday, director Jon Favreau explained the unlikely casting, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I had met him, he and I have both played chefs on screen and we struck up a conversation,” as Favreau wrote, directed and starred in 2014 film Chef. “I’ve liked his work even before The Bear, in Shameless, so I feel like I’ve watched him really develop and become this really interesting and complex actor who brings a lot of humanity and vulnerability to his roles. And the idea that we could ground this character with the performance with an actor like that I thought was a really interesting opportunity.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first Star Wars movie in seven years, making a move to the big screen after three previous seasons as The Mandalorian on Disney+. Pascal and Grogu (a.k.a. “Baby Yoda”) are back with their signature father-son dynamic, and this time, a little more of the star’s face is on display after years of being hidden behind the Mandalorian helmet.

Favreau noted he and Pascal have been “working together for eight years; he’s always been beloved, especially by genre fans, but in these past few years he’s just grown into one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and now there we go, we’ve got a character in a helmet that we’ve established has to wear it. Now fortunately, we were able to get him out of the helmet quite a bit in this one and even do some action set pieces with him.”

Another big change to the Mandalorian world is welcoming Sigourney Weaver, playing a leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers who works with Pascal on his mission.

After appearing in some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, Weaver said of joining Star Wars, “It’s such a joy for me to visit such a difference universe. Alien, the characters aren’t as friendly and they have bigger teeth than Grogu. But I’ve always been a fan of Star Wars — they always have the greatest actors playing these characters. It’s such a world that really takes you away from this planet and that’s exactly the kind of movie I think we need right now, take us far away from our troubled place.”

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu flies into theaters May 22.
