It’s going to be a spooky summer on Broadway as Paranormal Activity is haunting its way to New York.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Paranormal Activity – A New Story Live on Broadway, the Olivier-nominated stage adaptation of the horror franchise, will hit Broadway for a limited 20-week engagement. Previews begin Aug. 14, with an official opening night set for Sept. 15 at the August Wilson Theatre, currently home to Dog Day Afternoon starring Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Written by Levi Holloway (Grey House) and directed by Felix Barrett (Sleep No More), the production previously had sold-out runs in London’s West End, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. The play follows an original story rather than adapting characters or couples from the films.

Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse and an original producer of the Paranormal Activity film franchise, has joined the producing team for the Broadway production.

Here is the official synopsis: “James and Lou move from Chicago to London to escape their past, but they soon discover that places aren’t haunted, people are… With an original story inspired by the film franchise, Paranormal Activity reimagines the modern ghost story with an intimacy that only live theatre can provide.”

“New York is my home away from home. I fell in love with the city when making Sleep No More fifteen years ago, and always marveled at the way audiences engaged with the show,” Barrett said in a statement. “Having seen the incredible responses to Paranormal as it has toured the U.S., I’m beyond excited that it will be coming to Broadway and cannot wait to see how New Yorkers react!”

Holloway added: “That Paranormal Activity has earned the chance to trouble the sleep of Broadway audiences, that they’ll be immersed in the waking nightmare we’ve had the privilege to make, is the stuff of dreams. I offer it’s unlike anything else on the American stage right now; a work of horror, heart and absolute mischief borne from one of the most profound collaborations of my career.”

The production’s creative team includes scenic and costume design by Fly Davis (Caroline, or Change), illusions design by Chris Fisher (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), lighting design by Anna Watson (Giant), sound design by Gareth Fry (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), video and projections design by Luke Halls (The Lehman Trilogy), and general management by Samuel Dallas/Envoy Theatricals.

By arrangement with Paramount Pictures and Solana Films, Paranormal Activity is a Melting Pot production in association with Paramount Pictures. Producers include Simon Friend, Hanna Osmolska, Ken Davenport, Gavin Kalin Productions, Seaview, Crooked Letter, John Gore Organization, Michael Ngo/David Thomas Tao, Olympus Theatricals/FineWomen Productions, Amplify Pictures, Robina Riccitiello, and Lone Pine Theatricals, with Seaview serving as executive producer.

The Paranormal Activity franchise began in 2007 when the original film, made for just $15,000, grossed $194.2 million and became one of the most profitable movies ever made. The franchise later expanded with Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), The Marked Ones (2014), The Ghost Dimension (2015) and Next of Kin (2021), with the series earning more than $900 million globally.

An eighth Paranormal Activity film is currently expected to arrive on May 21, 2027, with James Wan producing and Ian Tuason directing.
