5 Tips for Marketers to Get Started with Salesforce Flow
Erin Duncan · 2026-05-07 · via Salesforce

For years, Salesforce Flow has been the on-platform automation tool managed exclusively by Salesforce Admins. However, now marketers can also use Flow to build multi-channel journeys, automate campaigns and reach customers at the right time. Shifting to Flow can feel like a big leap to many marketers, but it’s a powerful way to scale your strategy and marketing campaigns.

To help bridge the gap, I’ve outlined five actionable tips to help you get started with Flow. I’ll be speaking more in depth on this topic at Connections 2026 in June – hope to see you there.

Connections 2026 is Coming!

Join us in Chicago this June to learn from Erin Duncan and other experts on how to use Salesforce tools to improve your marketing.

Tip 1: Learn foundational concepts

All Flows, whether they are used for Salesforce Admin tasks or marketing campaigns, have the same foundation. For marketers who are new to Flow, it is important to understand the Flow canvas, foundational elements, Flow types and basics before you dive into the marketing-specific use cases.

Start by taking the Flow Builder Basics Trailhead or read through Heather Rinke’s An Introductory Guide to Salesforce Flow for Marketers blog post.

For any Salesforce Admins out there that are nervous about marketing using Flow, don’t worry. Access to what marketers can do with Flow is managed with two out-of-the-box permission sets, Marketing Cloud Admin and Marketing Cloud Manager, or a custom permission set can be created. If there are concerns, Admins can have marketers build Flows in Sandboxes and then push them live themselves.

Tip 2: Build a Flow in a Sandbox

The best way to understand the tool is to build a Flow. Everything will start clicking once you get hands-on with it. There are many step-by-step Flow blog posts out there that will help you build a simple flow in a Sandbox or demo org. Here’s two of my favorites:

If you don’t have access to a Sandbox or demo org, you can also practice building a flow with the Create a Screen Flow That Checks for Duplicates Trailhead module.

Tip 3: Take advantage of the Agentforce Campaign Creation

Marketing Cloud Next includes Agentforce Campaign Creation, which helps you build campaigns, campaign briefs, content and Flows. When building a campaign, use the “Draft with Agentforce” button, prompt Agentforce with your campaign objectives and watch as it generates a preview of your new campaign. You can then use Agentforce to refine your campaign, make it conversational or employ additional channels such as SMS.

Use Agentforce as a way to get started with your campaign flows and then iterate from there by adding in Path Experiments or Einstein Decision elements.

Tip 4: Use Flow templates

Hundreds of flow templates are included in Marketing Cloud Next, and this number grows with every release. Explore which templates are available, and if you build a custom flow, save it as a template so it can be reused for future campaigns. My favorite Flow template is Upsert a Record for a Person, which allows you to scale and streamline how records are processed after a form fill.

Tip 5: Save your work with Versioning

After you save your flow, revisions and additions can be saved as a new Flow version. With Flow versions, you can keep a flow active while you build and test out the next iteration and easily roll back to previous versions if needed. You can also add notes to each Flow version so you can keep track of what changed. Here’s a look at how it works.

Mastering Salesforce Flow isn’t just about learning a new technical skill. It’s about unlocking a higher level of agility and precision in your marketing strategy. While the transition to Flow might feel steep at first, remember that every one you build is an investment in a more scalable, personalized customer experience.

Start small in your sandbox, lean on Agentforce Campaign Creation for a head start and don’t be afraid to iterate through versions as you learn. By bridging the gap between marketing strategy and technical automation, you’re not just keeping up with the platform –you’re future-proofing your career in the era of agentic AI.
