Pride Guide: All the best SF events this Pride Month
Stephanie Gerson, Astrid Kane · 2026-06-03 · via The San Francisco Standard

In the more than a quarter-century since I came out, my professional life has been intertwined with the LGBTQ+ movement. I’ve chanted. I’ve sat in. I’ve marched. I’ve held candlelit vigils. I served as San Francisco Pride’s director of communications during the pandemic — as it happens, the only two-year period in the organization’s five-decade history during which there was no parade. I jumped onto a pile of hundreds of rainbow flags before they were installed on lampposts up and down Market Street. (They’re built for harsh weather, so the texture is rough.) Once, I locked eyes with ’60s girl-group diva Ronnie Spector as she performed “Be My Baby” at the Hard French Pride party at the long-gone venue Mezzanine.

But I’ve never witnessed anything as unnerving as the current moment. In the face of a darkening national climate on LGBTQ+ rights, and amid a retraction in corporate support, Pride Month is more poignant than ever. Queer and trans Americans must reckon with uncomfortable new realities. The community’s defiant, mutual-aid mantra of “We keep us safe” exists alongside an urgent need for cis and straight allies to step up.

That said, it’s June in San Francisco, which means it’s time to celebrate our hard-fought wins together. So get out there and be visible this month. Go to a screening, tip a queen at a drag show, and get to know your LGBTQ+ neighbors. Be loud, be proud, and keep fighting — in honor of the ancestors who came before and for all the generations that follow. Above all else, Happy Pride.

— Astrid Kane, senior food reporter
