Telegram FOSS is dead?

So it looks like its dead for good and we must all move over to whatever “mercurygram” is or forkgram.

Does anybody know if its possible to install one, try signing in to Telegram and then uninstalling Telegram FOSS if it works? My concern is uninstalling Telegram FOSS and ending up locked out of my account.

Install both clients to test or you have the option to get SMS codes using Telegram X client anyway…

I installed mercurygram and got a login code for mercurygram through Telegram FOSS. I have now uninstalled Telegram FOSS.

On the one hand I am happy that there are FOSS forks of it.

However it should be pointed out, that the normal chats, groups and channels in any Telegram client are not at all end to end encrypted. It is possible to have end to end encrypted chats, however if you switch clients those are gone. Your partners may be still sending you messages, in the new client you will just not even notice they sent you anything and never get the chance to read them. You can create new secret chats every time you try a new telegram client and hope all of your contacts don’t ever mess it up or just take it as it is: zero privacy messenger

All my secret chats got wiped when I changed client but I just re-invited those people to secret chats and explained I had swapped apps so history got wiped, it was no big deal.

I also use Signal too which I think is better security wise but its still isn’t perfect.

For Mercurygram it’s the same, it is based on Telegram FOSS, and so is now as much in coma as Telegram FOSS.

It makes no sense whatsoever to switch to it, right now.

Only Forkgram is maintained, currently

https://forum.f-droid.org/t/telegram-foss-is-dead/ << original topic, and answer:

In Telegram-FOSS Offtopics we’ve had a message regarding further development, on August 25, 2024:

I’ll probably leave v11 at this almost backed stage until the smoke dissolves
There are no critical vulnerabilities, except the one mitigated server-side anyway, new functions seem to be not that important and not sure these stars and crypto work in tfoss anyway (never tested)

So, Releases · Mercurygram/Mercurygram · GitHub << Mercurygram and everything else is tied into Telegram-FOSS development, Releases · Telegram-FOSS-Team/Telegram-FOSS · GitHub << check by the version numbers.

It would be great if we were to have any sort of update, on the current state of project?..

Do you maybe know of any issues concerning being blocked as soon as changing over to Forkgram?

Im hesitant in changing over from TGFoss because of this very reason, such as reports from users on the github issues → Telegram blocked me for spam · Issue #330 · forkgram/TelegramAndroid · GitHub

I am on forkgram for almost I think 1.5-2 years now, and 64Gram on desktop.

Just keep the old App installed, if anything doesn’t work with the new one use the old one.

Ok, so the issue with (other, heh!) 3rd-pary clients is, perhaps, best illustrated hear:
