Don't Wait for January
Robert Greiner · 2024-11-18 · via Robert Greiner

We romanticize beginnings. January 1st becomes a sanctuary for our procrastination, a mirage of the perfect time to start. But here's the harsh truth: big projects don't wait on calendar dates. They require momentum, and momentum starts now.

Waiting for January feels safe. It gives us a cushion, a grace period to "prepare." But our cushion quickly turns into quicksand. The first weeks of the new year are a haze. People are returning from holidays, inboxes are overflowing, and meetings are pushed back. By the time everyone's settled, it's mid-January.

By the time we get started in earnest, assigning tasks, setting goals, and aligning teams, it all takes time. Weeks slip by. Suddenly, it's February, and meaningful progress hasn't even begun while the year is already 10% over. Meanwhile, others who took the plunge earlier are already leagues ahead, riding the waves you hesitated to catch.

Five months down the line, you will find yourself no further along than you are today. But it's not just about stagnation; it's about regression. Standing still is moving backward in a world that spins faster every day. While you were waiting for the "right time" to start, your competition seized the moment, pushing forward, leaving you not just months but perhaps a year behind.

Starting now builds momentum. It's the first push that gets the rock rolling. You're setting the stage even if progress is slow during the holiday season. You're preparing the soil so that when the new year arrives, you're not planting seeds - you’re watching sprouts grow.

Don't let the arbitrary turn of the calendar dictate your actions. The "next big thing" won't move itself, and time won't grant you favors for waiting. Start now. Embrace the discomfort of beginning when others are winding down. When January comes, you're already in motion, propelled by the momentum you started building today.

Ready. Steady. Go.
