UPDATE (7/16/25): All paid users now have first-party access to Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Sonnet 4 (Thinking)! Free users can still bring their own key.

With less than a week of notice, Anthropic informed us they were cutting off nearly all of our first-party capacity to the Claude 3.x models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, 3.7 Sonnet, and 3.7 Sonnet Thinking). We do have some capacity from other inference providers, but not enough today, given the length of notice, to support all of the existing demand for these models.

Therefore, we have no choice but to immediately do the following:

• Users may have some short-term capacity issues with the Claude 3.x models as the new capacity comes online, but we should be fine. We will launch a promo rate for Gemini 2.5 Pro of 0.75x (originally 1x) as it is a strong alternative within Windsurf to help with this period.
• We have removed direct access to Claude 3.x models to Free tier users (or trials of the Pro plan). That being said, we have added access to all of these models via BYOK (bring-your-own-key).
• Claude Sonnet 4 will continue to be accessible via bring-your-own-key.

To be clear, our goal has and always will be to provide the best product, and as part of that, we have always prided ourselves on providing access to all models. We have been very clear to the Anthropic team that our priority was to keep the Anthropic models as recommended models, and have been continuously willing to pay for the capacity. We will continue to work to find capacity from other providers because we only care about the product and our users. We are concerned that Anthropic’s conduct will harm many in the industry, not just Windsurf.

The magic of Windsurf has never been limited to the model. While important, it is not hard to build a model wrapper. The magic of Windsurf is in the deep contextual understanding of existing knowledge. The magic is in the intentional and thought-out UX. The magic is in unique capabilities like Previews, Deploys, and Reviews. The magic is in the customizations like Workflows, Rules, and Memories. The magic is in the enterprise readiness, such as the agentic integration with JetBrains and the security posture with Hybrid and FedRAMP deployments. The magic is in the product.

We will continue to spend our time building the most magical product.
