Grenergy has entered into an agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) to secure 1.5GW-hours (GWh) of batteries for its storage projects in Oviedo and Escuderos, Spain.

Under the deal, CATL will deliver 252 TENER S batteries, which use lithium-iron phosphate (LFP)-based, high-density containers designed to enhance efficiency and lifespan in large-scale energy storage.

These batteries also include a compact layout and smart management features intended to raise operational performance, limit land usage and support grid reliability.

For the Oviedo project, 108 batteries corresponding to 700MW-hours (MWh) will be utilised.

Oviedo serves as the “flagship” initiative of Greenbox, Grenergy’s stand-alone battery platform in Europe. It is expected to be operational in the first half of 2027 (H1 2027).

The storage project is underpinned by a ten-year financial tolling agreement with an investment-grade international utility.

The other 144 units, representing 800MWh of capacity, will be deployed at Escuderos, Grenergy’s main hybrid development in Spain.

The site is set to combine 200MW of solar generation with 680MWh of battery storage.

Work on the battery energy storage system (BESS) is expected to start in H2 of this year, with commissioning targeted for 2027.

The battery component is supported by a 12-year financial tolling agreement scheduled to begin in July 2028.

The solar segment is backed by a separate 12-year daytime power purchase agreement signed in 2020 with Galp.

Grenergy and CATL previously collaborated on a 1.25GWh battery supply for Gabriela, Phase IV of the Oasis de Atacama project in Chile. According to Grenergy, the Escuderos project will adopt a hybrid approach first established in Chile with its Oasis de Atacama and Oasis Central platforms.

Grenergy CEO David Ruiz de Andrés said: “We are very proud to have a strategic partner like CATL to help us drive our flagship energy storage projects in Spain.

“After developing large-scale initiatives in Chile, we want to bring that expertise to Europe with assets in both stand-alone and hybrid projects that contribute to a safer, more flexible, cleaner and more competitive power system.”

Grenergy is said to have a pipeline exceeding 30GWh of stand-alone battery projects across key European markets. This pipeline extends to Germany (3GWh), Italy (5.8GWh), Poland (5GWh), Romania (7GWh), Spain (6GWh) and the UK (4GWh).
