The intensifying geopolitical complexity facing Hong Kong and the region has gone beyond the expectations of many people since John Lee Ka-chiu took the helm in 2022. With little more than a year remaining in his current term, the top leader has vowed to fend off growing external challenges while making the most of the coming year to accomplish more for the city.

In a wide-ranging exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post on Friday, the chief executive reviewed his achievements over the past four years and shared his thoughts on Hong Kong’s roles and connections amid the shifting political and economic environment. He also laid out his priorities for the coming year while addressing a raft of topical issues, including the city’s unprecedented move to align with the national five-year development plan, how to play up our unique advantages under “one country, two systems”, the Northern Metropolis project, talent recruitment, and the low birth rate, as well as accountability over the deadly Wang Fuk Court blaze last year.

There is no shortage of indicators that show improvements in different economic and social aspects during Lee’s tenure. The return to positive economic growth following the Covid-19 pandemic, rising average monthly household incomes and shorter waiting times for public rental housing are some of the evidence that gives credence to how the current administration has improved the city’s economic performance and people’s livelihoods.

It is good that the administration, having strengthened ties with Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia in recent years, will continue to explore new overseas markets while consolidating traditional partnerships, such as with the United States and Europe. The complex geopolitical situation, Lee said, would only highlight the city’s clear edge as a “safe, stable and secure society” for investors.

“I will not allow external factors to change the fundamental strength of Hong Kong. We reflect on what is right for Hong Kong, what have been the successful ingredients, and ensure we maintain and strengthen them,” he said. Indeed, business-to-business connections between Hong Kong and the West remain strong despite intensifying geopolitical tensions. The opportunities ahead remain promising.

The multipronged approach ensures Hong Kong diversifies its relationships and makes full use of its unique strengths under one country, two systems. Lee’s pledge to remain open-minded about forging partnerships with different places is to be welcomed.
