Hong Kong’s “one country, two systems” principle can serve as a model around the world and represents the city’s biggest contribution to Beijing’s Global Governance Initiative, political heavyweight Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee has said.

Ip, the convenor of the government’s key decision-making Executive Council and a former lawmaker, made the remarks at a media briefing on Thursday ahead of the third edition of the annual Global Prosperity Summit, which is organised by her think tank – the Savantas Policy Institute.

Han Zhiqiang, a former diplomat and current vice-president of the China Public Diplomacy Association, is also set to give a keynote address on China’s Global Governance Initiative – a five-point vision for reshaping the international order.

Asked about Hong Kong’s potential role in the initiative, Ip said the city’s biggest contribution would be “successful ongoing implementation” of its one country, two systems governing model.

“One country, two systems is a highly innovative and unprecedented governance model,” she said.

“I think China has brought forward this idea, not only for Hong Kong, but also as a possible model for other countries and regions for conflict resolution. It is, in a way, a global public good.”
