Patch Of Stars inflicted Hot Delight’s first career defeat to clinch a massive 1,091-1 double for Manfred Man Ka-leung at Sha Tin on Saturday, with Real Gentleman causing the upset of the season at $158.35.

The consistent Patch Of Stars recorded his third win of the campaign when he swooped late under Hugh Bowman to win the feature Class Two Sai Wan Shan Handicap (1,200m), with boom three-year-old Hot Delight only managing fourth as the $2.1 favourite.

Touted as a future star of Hong Kong racing after three wins from as many starts, Hot Delight worked hard early from gate 11 to sit outside of the lead and was swamped by several rivals soon after hitting the front 200m out.

Trainer Francis Lui Kin-wai indicated it could be the son of Too Darn Hot’s final run of the season.

Man and Bowman were delighted with Patch Of Stars’ one-length victory over Crimson Flash, who stormed home from last to grab second ahead of Public Attention.

“It was a good win, he raced well last time,” Bowman said after Patch Of Stars went one better than his last-start second to Young Champion.

“He appreciated the cushy track, I think he really let down a lot better today, given that. With the track bias, the pace was right on and I was hoping to be a bit closer in the run, but I couldn’t be without being comfortable.

“It proved to be a good call because he was strong at the end.”

Jockey Derek Leung and trainer Manfred Man celebrate Real Gentleman’s stunning upset victory.

After notching his sixth win from 16 career starts, Patch Of Stars’ rating will soar into the 100s, which could put him into Group company in the future.

While Patch Of Stars started on the third line of betting at $6.95, stablemate Real Gentleman was one of the rank outsiders in the Class Four Hong Kong Riding For The Disabled Association Cup (1,200m) and caused a major shock.

One of several blowout results on Saturday, Real Gentleman defied a wide trip without cover on the speed under Derek Leung Ka-chun to leave punters reeling.

He kept on strongly to deny Danny Shum Chap-shing’s debutant Grouper by half a length, with Positive Smile close behind in third.

It was a dramatic improvement on Real Gentleman’s six previous Hong Kong starts, which yielded no better than a 12th. Man said the good to yielding ground benefited the import, who won his only start in Ireland on yielding ground when known as The Liffey Swim.

“Big surprise. I think the track helped a lot and the drop down in the handicap. He drew 12 so it was a very tough win,” Man said.

Northern Fire Ball ($3.4) and Smart Avenue ($2.95) were the only two favourites to win on Saturday.

Real Gentleman’s shock victory came just half an hour after Oneshot upstaged his $70.35 quote to win the Class Four Lei Yue Mun Riding School Handicap (1,000m).

Tracking the speed under Karis Teetan, the Cody Mo Wai-kit-trained gelding kept on strongly late to beat Master Payment by three-quarters of a length.

He relished the drop back to the straight 1,000m after running fifth at the course and distance on debut and a distant last over 1,200m second up.

Spice Bag made it a tough start for punters on Saturday’s card, claiming the Butterfly Bay Plate (1,000m) for Griffins on debut at $49.9.

The David Hall-trained two-year-old stormed home from back in the field under James Orman to nail the $3.4 favourite, Sharp Planet, by three-quarters of a length.

Hall admitted “it was probably a surprise he won the race”.

James Orman boots home Spice Bag.

“He’s a lovely looking horse and probably clearly bred to get over a longer journey, so we thought he could have the experience race today and then progress to the 1,200m race,” Hall said.

“It just set up well for him and he was well prepped for the race, there’s no question about that. But we just thought the journey was going to be way too sharp for him. So from that point of view, it was a surprise, but I think it probably just tells the horse has got a bit of class and hopefully we’ve got more to look forward to.”

Leung bagged a massive 3,372-1 double after booting home another roughie, $21.3 shot Straight To Glory in the Class Three Pok Fu Lam Country Park Handicap (1,000m).

The Michael Chang Chun-wai-trained sprinter ran on strongly down the centre of the straight track to charge down Lucky Candy by half a length.
