Roberto De Zerbi has been given significant funds and is looking to make two big moves in midfield. Tottenham are pushing to land Sandro Tonali, even though Newcastle will demand a huge fee for the Italy international, and have entered the race to sign Mateus Fernandes.

West Ham need to raise funds after relegation from the Premier League and are expected to lose Fernandes. The 21-year-old impressed after joining from Southampton for £38m last summer and is a key target for Manchester United. However Tottenham are pushing for the Portuguese midfielder and prepared to beat United on the finances. Real Madrid have also considered a move for Fernandes.

Tottenham are also one of the clubs considering a move for the West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville. Chelsea and United are tracking the winger, who has scored twice for the Netherlands at the World Cup. Aston Villa, Chelsea and Everton have expressed interest in Jarrod Bowen but West Ham are desperate not to lose their captain.

Chelsea are considering a move for the Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra, a major target for Inter. The Serie A champions have been pushing to complete a £38.8m deal for the 21-year-old but face competition from Chelsea and one other Premier League side. Palestra, who spent last season on loan at Cagliari, has made two appearances for Italy.

Chelsea are monitoring the situation as they look to bolster Xabi Alonso’s squad before the season. Alonso’s options at right-back are Reece James and Malo Gusto, who could be moved on.

Chelsea’s manager is assessing his squad and will want to bolster his defence. Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix is high on Chelsea’s list of centre-back targets. Lacroix, 26, has interest from elsewhere. Chelsea are also considering Como’s Jacobo Ramón. They could look to sign two centre-backs but that may depend on outgoings. There is uncertainty over Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana. Alonso also needs extra depth at left-back after Marc Cucurella joined Real Madrid.
