The referee who oversaw of January’s chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final during which Senegal walked off has been listed to take charge of this month’s African Champions League final.
Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ndala, who is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is due to referee the first leg of the final between South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and the Moroccan club AS Far in Tshwane/Pretoria on 17 May.
Morocco were Senegal’s opponents in the Afcon final in Rabat. Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, and some of his players left the pitch for 15 minutes in protest at Morocco being awarded a penalty, after a VAR review. A few minutes earlier a Senegal player had been penalised by Ndala for a push before he headed against a post, meaning that when Ismaïla Sarr headed in the rebound the goal was disallowed.

Morocco lost 1-0 in extra time but in March were awarded a 3-0 win by the Confederation of African Football (Caf), which punished Senegal for leaving the pitch. Caf also runs the continent’s Champions League.
Ndala was not among the referees selected last month by Fifa for this summer’s World Cup. He was among the group that went to the US for the Club World Cup last year.
