Kelkoo scales its infrastructure with Proxmox VE

When Kelkoo became independent from Yahoo, it had to rebuild its IT infrastructure from the ground up. As the new environment evolved, the team migrated roughly 500 physical servers and 100 VMs to Proxmox VE, creating a virtualization platform that has run in production since 2013. Today, Kelkoo operates 2 production clusters and a development cluster, hosting around 1,000 virtual machines.

Kelkoo Group is an e-commerce marketing platform that connects advertisers with shoppers through a global shopping network and data-driven optimization. For an organization whose services depend on a reliable technical foundation, infrastructure flexibility, automation, and operational stability are essential.

Starting over with open source at the core

After several years as part of Yahoo, Kelkoo became an independent company again and had to establish its own IT environment. This meant selecting a new hosting provider, deploying new hardware, defining a new architecture, and choosing a new software stack, with open-source technologies playing a central role. Following a significant investment in hardware, Kelkoo built a substantial physical server infrastructure. At the same time, the existing Xen-based virtualization environment showed limitations in areas such as automation, visibility, and day-to-day management. Kelkoo needed a virtualization platform that would be straightforward to deploy and operate, provide the functionality required for a large production environment, and scale as requirements evolved. Following a technical evaluation, the team selected Proxmox Virtual Environment.

Automation from day one

Kelkoo deployed its first environment with Proxmox VE version 3 in 2013 and designed the architecture around automation from the start. The team standardized cluster creation and virtual machine deployment using Ansible and the Proxmox VE API. During the initial transformation, the team migrated approximately 500 physical servers to the new virtualized environment, together with around 100 virtual machines previously running on the legacy Xen platform.

Tools including Ansible and Clonezilla helped standardize and automate the migration process and reduce manual work. Despite individual cases involving specific hardware or performance requirements, the transition proceeded smoothly and allowed Kelkoo to progressively consolidate workloads on the new platform. Automation also simplified ongoing operations. Standardized deployments created more consistent environments, reduced the potential for human error, and made it easier for the infrastructure team to manage the platform as it grew.

A platform built to scale

The infrastructure has evolved considerably since 2013, while Kelkoo has continued to rely on Proxmox VE as its virtualization foundation.

  • 2 production clusters with 27 and 13 dual-processor servers
  • 1 development cluster with 3 servers
  • Approximately 1,000 virtual machines
  • Enterprise storage systems connected via NFS

Kelkoo distributes critical applications across the production environment to support resilience and service continuity, and works closely with Liberasys, an official Proxmox Partner, for consulting, best practices, and guidance on architectural decisions and major upgrades.

A platform proven in production since 2013

According to Kelkoo, no major production incident has been directly attributable to Proxmox VE since the original 2013 deployment. Even when issues affected management services or the surrounding network infrastructure, the virtual machines kept running. For Kelkoo’s infrastructure team, maintaining workload availability despite issues affecting individual components has become an important measure of the platform’s reliability.

Together with automation and standardized deployments, this stability has helped Kelkoo keep its large virtualization environment manageable as its infrastructure has evolved over more than a decade.

Adapting for the next phase

Kelkoo recently upgraded its infrastructure from Proxmox VE 8.0 to Proxmox VE 9.2 and continues to keep the platform up to date. Following successful testing, the team also deployed Proxmox Backup Server in production. At the same time, Kelkoo is moving suitable workloads to Kubernetes. This changes the mix of workloads rather than replacing virtualization: the company continues to rely on Proxmox VE as a stable foundation for workloads that remain virtualized.

More than a decade after its first deployment, Kelkoo continues to use Proxmox VE as a core part of its infrastructure strategy, combining automation, operational control, and proven reliability as the wider technology landscape evolves.
