Proxmox Virtual Environment 9.2 available!
invalid@exam · 2026-05-21 · via Proxmox Support Forum

We are excited to announce the release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 9.2. This release focuses heavily on platform refinement, stability, and core optimization.

Proxmox VE 9.2 is built on the robust Debian 13.5 "Trixie" and ships with Linux kernel 7.0 as the new stable default. In addition to core system enhancements, this update integrates the latest versions of our key underlying technologies, including QEMU 11.0, LXC 7.0, and ZFS 2.4. Storage capabilities have also been advanced with Ceph Tentacle 20.2.1 as the new default stable release, and Ceph Squid 19.2.3 still available as an option.

Here are some of the highlights in Proxmox VE 9.2:

  • New Dynamic Load Balancer for improved cluster resource utilization
  • Expanded SDN with WireGuard as a new fabric protocol
  • Fine-grained BGP/EVPN filtering with route maps and prefix lists
  • Management of custom CPU models from the GUI
  • New HA arm/disarm functionality
  • Enrollment of Microsoft and Windows UEFI 2023 certificates via GUI and API
  • and much more

This release incorporates numerous bugfixes and performance improvements across the platform. For a comprehensive list of changes, please see the full release notes.

FAQ
Q
: Can I upgrade from the latest Proxmox VE 8 to 9 with apt?
A: Yes, please follow the upgrade instructions on https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_8_to_9

Q: Can I upgrade a 9.1 installation to the stable 9.2 via apt?
A: Yes, upgrading from 9.1 is possible via apt and GUI. We recommend switching to the [pve-enterprise] repository on upgrade for the most stable experience.

Q: How long will Proxmox VE 8.4 receive bug fixes and security support?
A: Proxmox VE 8.4 will receive security updates and critical bug fixes until August 2026. This support window provides an overlap of approximately one year after the release of Proxmox VE 9.0, giving users ample time to plan their upgrade to the new major version.
For more information on the support lifecycle of Proxmox VE releases, please visit:
https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/chapter-pve-faq.html#faq-support-table

Q: Can I install Proxmox VE 9.2 on top of Debian 13 "Trixie"?
A: Yes, see https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_13_Trixie

Q: Can I upgrade my Proxmox VE 8.4 cluster with Ceph Reef to Proxmox VE 9.2 with Ceph Squid or Tentacle?
A: This is a multi-step process. First, you have to upgrade Ceph from Reef to Squid while still on Proxmox VE 8.4, and afterward you can upgrade Proxmox VE from 8.4 to 9.2. Then you can upgrade Ceph from Squid to Tentacle on Proxmox VE 9.2. There are a lot of improvements and changes, so please follow the upgrade documentation exactly as described:
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Ceph_Reef_to_Squid
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_8_to_9
https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Ceph_Squid_to_Tentacle

Q: Where can I get more information about feature updates?
A: Check the roadmap, forum, the mailing list, and/or subscribe to our newsletter.

Congratulations! As usual, we will dedicate a separate environment for testing for our mutual customers.

Blockbridge : Ultra low latency all-NVME shared storage for Proxmox - https://www.blockbridge.com/proxmox

Great day! Great news... Dynamic Load Balancer is a killer feature...

Great news for the Proxmox ecosystem, wireguard and dynamic load balancing are such great additions !

Keep up the good work !

great new feature on the cluster resource balancing, good work!

Interesting with the Ceph Tentacle support!

Thanks! Been seeing the features the last two weeks already, now they are official! Thanks for your work - love the new load balancing!

Heck yea! Something else to geek out on now!

Happy to report that we have successfully run our storage-oriented CI/CD workflows against PVE 9.2, and no issues were uncovered during the initial test runs.

Congratulations again on a solid release.

Sincerely,
Blockbridge

The Roadmap states

Management of custom CPU models from the web interface.A new section in the Datacenter → Guest Resources/Hardware allows creating, editing, and removing custom CPU models from the web interface.Custom CPU models allow tailoring the virtual CPU exposed to VMs to a specific set of features. The VM CPU flags selector indicates the supported flags on each cluster node, making cluster-wide compatibility issues easier to spot up front.

I did see this Datacenter → Guest Resources/Hardware on a PVE 9.1.19 yesterday evening, but not today anymore on a PVE 9.2.2. The menu is flat again without Guest Resources/Hardware.
What am I missing?

We just dropped the grouping as the group-parent menu was an empty panel, so provided no real value as is. It's all still there though:

Thanks for clarification. I had around 20 single servers updated yesterday at different times and seeing a different menu only on one of them, was a bit confusing.

And, of course, I had just chosen yesterday, to update my home-lab, since all these security issues kept piling up in the news, not that I have anything open to the Internet there...

So I did a da capo today.

Worked pretty well generally, except my biggest workstation, typically running Windows: that has a wild assortment of hardware and as far as I can tell the 7* kernel gets stuck (just stops...) booting with a Mediatek WiFi adapter or rather the Bluetooth part of that, sticking with the 6* kernel avoids that: stability of a non-micro-kernel OS still rests with its drivers...

I guess I'll have to start blacklisting, since it's really just inside the box but not used for anything but a gaming controller when doing Windows.

I wonder what does "BGP Fabrics" bring to the table that EVPN/VLAN couldn't provide.

Would be great to be able to set VRF for physical node interfaces as exit point for BGP integrations.

Currently we have to set that up manually after zone creation.

I wonder what does "BGP Fabrics" bring to the table that EVPN/VLAN couldn't provide.

It's BGP unnumbered in particular, it can be used as underlay and works really well with Wireguard as well, or just for announcing routes from EVPN VRFs. It slotted really well into the existing fabrics and in conjunction with upcoming features like VRFs (see below) can make setups like VRF-lite very easy to set up.

Would be great to be able to set VRF for physical node interfaces as exit point for BGP integrations.

Comprehensive VRF support (creating VRFs, managing routes in a VRF and route leaking between EVPN VRFs, assigning VRFs to interfaces / fabrics / ...) was initially planned as well, but unfortunately didn't make the cut for 9.2, as it needed some further refinement and conceptual work. A lot of the work done in this release will benefit the VRF feature as well (particularly the route maps) and was already built with that in mind.

Does this mean that route leaking between EVPN VRFs is still not possible via the Proxmox VE 9.2 GUI?

You can leak into the default routing table via the Exit Node parameter, but currently not between EVPN VRFs.
