I want to apologize for the SEO title, but the content is real, honest to goodness typed.

Before Railway, I worked at Citrix where I would help sell into the kind of mission-critical cloud environments where a deploy at the wrong time costs more than my entire department, at companies like Verizon, Lockheed, and others. So I think it's safe to say I have seen a thing or two. Across my last 10 years in cloud, I've sat on a few hundred customer calls helping teams pick, migrate to, and sometimes quietly leave their cloud platform. When founders DM me asking which platform to choose, I have a real answer, and as much as I suggest Railway (I do), there are times where I advise people to burn down their credits instead.

This is the post version of those conversations.

There are about fifteen viable PaaS options for shipping a backend application in 2026, the boundaries between them have blurred, and the marketing pages all say the same five things. Pick the wrong one and you spend the next year of your life writing migration scripts instead of writing your product. Most "best deployment platform" guides are written by the platforms ranked highly in them. Mine is too. The difference is that I'm going to tell you, out loud, where the answer isn't Railway. We make Railway, so this is partisan, but it isn't credulous. There is no single winner in this category. There are wrong answers, depending on what you're trying to build.

One anchor before the list. The implicit alternative to every platform here is rolling your own on AWS, GCP, or Azure directly. That is a real choice, and one I have seen go sideways enough times that I'm writing this post in the first place. The vanilla cloud experience is several afternoons of console clicking, IAM archaeology, and a support contract you may or may not have budgeted for. Every platform on this list is, on some axis, an argument for why you should not do all of that yourself. Where they differ is in which parts of that work they hide, and which parts they merely move around.

Eight things that decide which platform you end up on

Most "best X" listicles open with twelve criteria nobody uses. Here are the eight that move the decision.

1. Time-to-first-deploy. How many minutes from git push to a live URL. This sets the ceiling on how fast you can iterate when you are still trying to find your product.

2. Database and stateful service primitives. Where the PaaS abstractions leak. Standing up Redis, Postgres, or a queue next to your app is the thing that breaks most platforms once you are past hello-world.

3. Pricing model honesty. Usage-based, credit-based, seat-based, or all three layered together. Every platform tells a different story; what matters is which story holds up when you 10x your traffic next quarter.

4. Scaling model. Container-based, request-based, autoscaling guarantees, and the cold-start tax (if any). Some platforms scale your bill faster than your traffic.

5. Multi-region and failover. Actual multi-region writes, not "we serve static assets from London." This matters less than the marketing suggests for most teams, and a lot more for the teams where it does.

6. Bring-your-own-cloud and exit ramps. Can you leave. This is the question that comes up two years in, never on day one.

7. Observability and primitives. Logs, metrics, traces, secrets, environments. The stuff that is either built in or that you are paying Datadog for by month three.

8. Agentic and AI workload support. GPU access, long-running jobs, MCP integration. The most-real recent shift in this category, and the one most platforms have not picked a position on yet.

If a platform's marketing page can't tell you where they stand on these eight, that's a tell.

The ten platforms, ranked

1. Railway

Best for full-stack apps that need a real database.

I run Railway, so I'm biased. Here is what is defensible: Railway is the platform where your backend services, queues, cron jobs, and managed Postgres / MySQL / Redis / Mongo all live in one surface and one bill. Multi-region for stateless services is first-class; managed Postgres ships with in-region high availability via Patroni. Cross-region multi-master Postgres writes are not on the menu yet, and I'll save you the trouble of pretending otherwise.

Features: git-deploy, native Postgres / MySQL / Redis / Mongo (one-click HA Postgres on Patroni shipped this March), private networking between services out of the box, MCP server and Claude Code-friendly DX, agentic provisioning via the Stripe Projects CLI (its stripe add command provisions managed infrastructure and is built for agent-driven workflows), per-environment secrets and config, persistent volumes.

Pricing: $5 Hobby with included usage credit, Pro at $20/seat with usage on top. The honest downside of usage-based pricing is the part I'm not going to talk around: if you don't watch the dashboard, a viral weekend can grow your bill. I tell every team to set spend alerts on day one. The trade-off is that the bill tracks the work, so when your product isn't being used, you aren't paying for it either.

Best for teams shipping a full-stack product that includes a real backend and a real database, not a marketing site. Teams who want one platform instead of stitching Vercel-plus-Supabase-plus-Upstash-plus-Render together. Teams who want agent-driven deploys to work end to end.

Honest trade-offs: cross-region multi-master Postgres isn't here yet. Enterprise procurement (dedicated capacity, the deepest end of compliance attestations) is younger than AWS or Heroku. If your buyer requires a long list of SOC2 controls today, your evaluation will be longer; check railway.com for the current state.

2. Heroku

Best for the classic PaaS contract (with an asterisk).

Heroku is the historical anchor of this entire category. Every modern PaaS, Railway included, owes a design debt to the dyno-and-buildpack model Heroku invented (I wrote about this in Heroku Walked So Railway Can Run). In February 2026, Salesforce moved Heroku into sustaining-engineering mode (reported Feb 2026) and laid off roughly a thousand people across Heroku, Agentforce, and adjacent teams. That changed the meaning of "is Heroku still a reasonable answer" by a fair margin. There are still legitimate reasons to stay (procurement gravity, compliance review cycles measured in quarters, an existing add-on contract you can't unwind this fiscal year); a platform in sustaining mode does not change those constraints, it changes how long you have to plan the exit.

Features: buildpacks, the add-ons marketplace, Postgres, Redis, ten regions (Mumbai and Montreal joined in late 2025), the workflows you remember. The Fir runtime, Heroku's Kubernetes-based generation, exists but I have not seen a single greenfield team pick it.

Pricing: per-dyno, per-add-on, with a "we own Salesforce now" pricing posture. The Eco tier ($5/mo, sleeps) replaced the free dyno; the cheapest production-ready setup is more expensive than its peers.

Best for teams who already know Heroku, have legacy apps deployed there, and have no urgent reason or political ability to migrate.

Honest trade-offs: the platform is in sustaining mode as of February 2026. Each app runs in one region; cross-region failover means duplicating apps and putting a load balancer in front. Pricing rose while the feature set did not.

3. Vercel

Best for frontend and Next.js apps.

Vercel is the best place to host a Next.js application. If your product is mostly frontend, that is the right answer, and you don't need to read further in this section.

Vercel did ship a real answer to part of this in 2025: Fluid Compute and Active CPU pricing, which only charge for active CPU on idle-heavy or streaming workloads, can cut function bills by 80%+ on the right shape of traffic. That is a real improvement and I credit it. The cost story for compute is now competitive on I/O-bound workloads.

Features: frontend-optimized CDN, native Next.js integration, Edge Functions, image optimization, preview deployments, Fluid Compute with Active CPU pricing, Vercel Postgres (Neon-backed), Vercel KV.

Pricing: Hobby free; Pro $20/seat with included credit, plus usage-based add-ons. Bandwidth and per-seat costs are now the more legitimate critique; "Vercel cost me $286 on a $20 plan" is a 2026 genre of post for a reason.

Best for frontend-heavy applications. Static and ISR-heavy Next.js sites. Teams already standardized on Vercel's tooling. AI streaming endpoints that fit Fluid Compute's shape.

Honest trade-offs: the backend story is still several primitives in one trench coat (serverless functions, Edge Functions, the hobby-tier limits that catch people on day 90). For long-running stateful workloads, you are still better served pairing Vercel with a real backend platform.

4. Render

Best for simple managed services.

Render is the platform that does the obvious things well. If you need a web service, a worker, a Postgres, and you don't want to think about it, Render gets you there with a predictable bill.

Features: git-deploy, managed Postgres, Key Value (Redis-compatible), cron jobs, private networking, autoscaling on Standard tier and above.

Pricing: instance-based tiers starting at $7/month for the first paid web service. Managed Postgres in the same neighborhood. No surprise spikes.

Best for small to mid-size apps that fit cleanly into "web service, worker, database." Teams that want a fixed monthly bill they can defend in a budget meeting. Teams that don't need multi-region writes or unusual primitives.

Honest trade-offs: free-tier services sleep aggressively (15-minute idle timeout). Multi-region story is effectively one region per service (with Frankfurt as the EU option). The platform is opinionated in ways that work great until you hit one of the edges.

5. Fly.io

Best for low-latency global apps.

Fly has the most-real multi-region primitive in this list. If you are running a real-time service, a multiplayer game backend, or anything where the speed of light is your enemy, Fly is doing something nobody else is.

Features: native multi-region deploys, edge instances, Firecracker-based microVMs, managed Postgres with regional read replicas, fly-replay header routing.

Pricing: per-VM, per-second machine billing. Legible once you understand the model, less legible if you don't. GPUs were deprecated for new accounts in 2024; if you need GPUs in 2026, look at Cloud Run, Northflank, or specialized providers.

Best for latency-sensitive services. Teams who have measured user latency and decided it matters. Anyone running an LLM endpoint, a multiplayer server, or an edge cache that needs to be in twelve places. Teams with ops capacity to invest.

Honest trade-offs: reliability is the dominant 2026 critique. The October 2024 fleet-wide orchestration outage cast a long shadow, and the platform has had a steady drumbeat of incidents through 2025 and into 2026 (worth checking their public infra log before you commit). Ops complexity is also higher than the peers in this list. You are closer to "deploying VMs" than "deploying applications" in mental model.

6. Northflank

Best for teams committed to Kubernetes or bring-your-own-cloud.

Northflank has been doing the heavy work of bringing Kubernetes-native deployment to teams who want it without operating a control plane. Their BYOC story is good, and over the last year they have leaned all the way into enterprise AI and BYOC AI sandboxes as their wedge.

Features: Kubernetes-native scheduling, BYOC into AWS / GCP / Azure / Oracle / CoreWeave / bare metal / on-prem, preview environments, native managed databases, GPU support, microVM isolation, audit logging and SSO.

Pricing: per-instance with no markup on your underlying cloud cost when you BYOC (you keep your own committed-spend discounts); management fees layered on top. Sandbox is free with a credit card.

Best for teams who have decided that Kubernetes is non-negotiable, who want a managed control plane on top of their own cloud accounts, or who have a compliance reason to keep workloads in their own VPC. Also a clean answer right now for AI workloads that need GPU plus microVM isolation.

Honest trade-offs: the Kubernetes mental model leaks through in a way that, for most teams, adds surface area. If you wanted Kubernetes you would run it; if you didn't, Northflank's choice points are usually one more decision than you needed to make. Their own listicle's critique of Railway leans on framing that was already dated when they shipped (the "smaller ecosystem" and "limited advanced features" lines have not tracked reality for a couple of years now). The fact-check is yours to do; we will not return the favor in kind.

7. DigitalOcean App Platform

Best for budget-conscious small apps.

DigitalOcean is the household-name option for cheap reliable VMs, and App Platform is their PaaS layer on top.

Features: git-deploy, autoscaling on dedicated instances, static sites free tier, integration with DO managed databases (Postgres / MySQL / Redis / Kafka, each separately billed).

Pricing: static sites are free for the first 3 apps. Container web services start at $5/mo for shared-CPU. A managed Postgres adds $7+/mo on top, billed separately from your app.

Best for small apps with predictable load, teams who already use DigitalOcean for VMs, projects where budget legibility matters more than developer experience.

Honest trade-offs: the developer experience is years behind the modern PaaS bar. Documentation is fine; the platform feels like a product line rather than a product. Support depth for production issues is the recurring complaint I hear when teams call asking what to evaluate next.

8. Google Cloud Run

Best for containerized serverless on GCP, if you have already paid the GCP setup tax.

Cloud Run is the friendliest abstraction in GCP, and on its own merits it is a capable serverless container platform. Where it falls down is everything around it. Getting from "I have a GCP account" to "I have a service serving public traffic" is in the neighborhood of thirty distinct steps if you do it cleanly: billing enablement, project setup, enabling five or six APIs you had never heard of, IAM policy, a service account or two, Artifact Registry, build configuration, region selection, the deploy itself, a custom domain via Cloud Load Balancing, and then a Cloud SQL instance with a VPC connector if you wanted a database next to your service. None of those steps is hard. All of them together is half an afternoon for an experienced developer and considerably more for everyone else.

The other thing I tell teams considering Cloud Run: the support story is GCP support. Standard plan is forum-based, premium is expensive, and if your error message is one of the more interesting ones, the docs are not going to save you. I have sat with teams who lost real days to permission-denied cascades that turned out to be three IAM roles deep.

The 2025 update worth knowing: Cloud Run GPUs went GA in June 2025 (Cloud Run GPUs GA), NVIDIA L4 without quota requests. That is the cleanest hyperscaler answer to "I want serverless inference and I don't want to operate it." If your AI workload is a sane fit for request-based scaling, Cloud Run is on the shortlist, provided you have GCP operating cost in the budget.

Features: container-based, request-based scaling, scale-to-zero, GPU GA (NVIDIA L4), native GCP integrations.

Pricing: per-request and per-CPU-second. Cheap at low scale, gets interesting at high scale. Add the cost of whatever GCP support tier you will rely on.

Best for teams already on GCP who have already eaten the setup cost. Workloads with bursty, sporadic traffic. Container deployments that don't need persistent state of their own. AI inference that fits scale-to-zero economics.

Honest trade-offs: you are inside GCP. You still own everything around the container (database, queue, CDN, IAM, networking). Cold starts on cold containers. Support is what GCP support is.

9. AWS App Runner

Maintenance mode as of April 2026; skip unless you're already on it.

On March 31, 2026, AWS announced App Runner is moving to maintenance mode effective April 30, 2026 (AWS availability change); no new customers, no new features. Existing apps continue running. The recommended successor is ECS Express Mode, which launched in late 2025. If you are not already deep in AWS and dependent on App Runner today, this section is closed for you.

Features: container-based, autoscaling, AWS-native IAM and VPC integration.

Pricing: per-instance, AWS-flavor. Predictable for AWS shops, opaque for everyone else.

Best for AWS-locked teams whose timing happens to be "we already adopted App Runner before April 30, 2026." Realistically, zero new projects fit that.

Honest trade-offs: maintenance mode. If you are starting fresh on AWS today, evaluate ECS Express Mode, Fargate directly, or one of the platforms above this section.

10. Azure App Service

Best for Microsoft-stack teams.

Azure App Service is the .NET shop's PaaS, but it is also a first-class home for Node, Python, Java, PHP, Ruby, and containers on Linux. Microsoft does the integration story Microsoft does well.

Features: managed runtimes for .NET / Node / Python / Java / PHP / Ruby (Linux and Windows), App Service Plans, Microsoft Entra ID integration, deployment slots.

Pricing: tier-based, Azure-flavor. F1 Free for tiny shared workloads, B1 Basic around $13/mo, Standard around $70/mo, Premium more.

Best for teams with deep Microsoft and Azure investment, .NET shops, anyone whose IT department says "use Azure" and means it.

Honest trade-offs: outside the Microsoft stack, the developer experience feels stuck in the early 2010s. Azure had a couple of high-profile platform-wide incidents in late 2025 and early 2026 that took App Service down along with the rest of the platform; if you depend on Azure, you also inherit Azure's blast radius.

Six questions that decide for you

Most decision frameworks bury the answer in fifteen criteria. Here are six questions that route directly to a small set of platforms.

Do you need a real Postgres running next to your app from day one?

Railway, Render, Heroku.

Do you need true multi-region writes, not just cached static assets?

Railway, Fly.io.

Are you running mostly frontend code?

Vercel for the frontend, Railway for the backend half. Stop trying to make a serverless function be your backend.

Do you have a hard requirement to deploy into your own AWS / GCP / Azure account?

Northflank, Cloud Run on GCP, App Service on Azure.

Is bill predictability the single biggest constraint?

Render, DigitalOcean.

Are you running agentic or AI workloads with MCP, long-running jobs, or one-command deploys from Claude Code?

Railway. We have leaned into this the hardest of anyone in this list.

Should I just use AWS, GCP, or Azure directly?

Sometimes. If you have a dedicated platform engineer already, a compliance posture that demands it, or a workload (high-end GPU, exotic networking, regulated data) that doesn't fit a PaaS, the vanilla cloud is the right answer. Most teams in 2026 don't have those constraints, and the "free" path into AWS/GCP/Azure costs roughly one engineer's quarter to set up cleanly, plus an ongoing support tier most people forget to budget. Every platform on this list is charging you to skip that quarter.

The wrong move is staying on a platform that has stopped fitting

There is no universal "best" deployment platform. There is the platform whose constraints align with your team's, and there is the platform you happen to already be on. When those two stop matching, the migration tax is real, and it gets worse every month you delay. I see this on calls every week.

The honest answer for most full-stack teams in 2026, especially the ones building products that need a real backend and a real database, is Railway. We built it because the existing options had stopped serving the way modern apps look. If you are shipping mostly frontend, the answer is Vercel. If you have decided Kubernetes is non-negotiable, the answer is Northflank. If you need true global low-latency, the answer is Fly, with eyes open about the ops cost. If you have institutional reasons to stay on Heroku in 2026, the answer is still Heroku, for now.

Pick the platform that maps to your team's actual constraints.
