Work to upgrade Pontoon Dock DLR station has been pushed back by a few months while detailed design work and costs are still being estimated.

The station needs upgrades to handle projected passenger demand as new housing is built nearby, but the current design can’t accommodate it. The upgrade will add six new escalators to reduce the load on the existing lifts, along with a new mezzanine level and street level improvements.

Outline planning permission was granted in 2024, and the contractor, Morgan Sindall, has since been appointed to complete the detailed design and deliver the station upgrade.

Preliminary work was due to start in June, but has now been pushed back to September, subject to costs remaining within the funding envelope and land agreements being secured. TfL’s Finance Committee papers say that the main works are now planned to start in January 2027.

The station upgrade is being 75 percent third-party funded, with contributions from Homes England (the government’s housing and regeneration agency) and the Greater London Authority (GLA), developer contributions from Lendlease and funding from TfL’s Sustainable Housing and Accessibility Fund.
