Passengers travelling on Lumo’s services are set to benefit from improved onboard internet connections, as the rail operator prepares to introduce Starlink satellite technology across its fleet this autumn.

The upgrade will be provided on Lumo’s trains running along the East Coast Main Line between London and Scotland.
Unlike traditional onboard Wi-Fi systems, which rely on mobile phone networks and trackside infrastructure, Starlink uses a network of low Earth orbit satellites to provide internet access. The technology is designed to maintain a more reliable connection in areas where mobile coverage can be patchy, particularly on long-distance intercity routes.
Lumo is working with train manufacturer Hitachi, connectivity specialist Icomera and rolling stock owner Beacon Rail to install the new satellite-enabled system across its East Coast fleet.
Paul Jackson, Head of Customer and Stakeholder Engagement, said: “Providing a high-quality, reliable Wi-Fi experience is vital for our customers, whether they’re travelling for business or leisure. We know people want to stay connected and work effectively while onboard.
“The introduction of Starlink technology on our East Coast Main Line services marks a significant step forward in connectivity. Working with Hitachi and Icomera, we’re committed to delivering a modern, seamless experience that helps customers get the most out of their journey with Lumo.”
