Occasionally, I find it helpful (especially during slow news weeks) to take a step back and observe what's happening across the broader tech landscape to gain a better appreciation for self-hosted projects and communities.

For example, Microsoft made headlines (multiple times) again this week after banning the word microslop on their Discord server amid unsubstantiated claims that Windows 12 will be AI-focused and subscription-based. Just a few days later, rumors also began circulating that OpenAI is developing an internal GitHub alternative in response to the platform's numerous outages over the last several months.

And then there's the viral McDonald's fiasco, which saw the fast food chain's CEO try his best to convince the world he actually consumes his company's food (spoiler: he doesn't) in an ad announcing the return of a popular sandwich. Can you imagine a world in which open source and self-hosted software developers weren't users of the tools they build?

In other news:

• The viral AI chat bot OpenClaw surpassed React as the most-starred project on GitHub (see also: OpenClaw Exposure Watchboard)
• Palmr, a file transfer app that launched and gained popularity last year, has been officially been archived on GitHub
• Anthropic launched a Claude for Open Source Program that will gift six free months of Claude Max to maintainers of popular projects (and some have already made the cut!)
• Frenck of Home Assistant fame developed an integration that allows users to play the original DOOM directly from their dashboards
• A new-ish MQTT platform called BunkerM fell prey to the AI marketing hype with a rebranded AI domain – that's currently parked?
• Ente (mentioned last week for their Locker launch) was back at it again this week with the announcement of Ensu, an offline, privacy-focused LLM app
• Myrient, a video game preservation site with over 390 terabytes of retro game ROMs, announced they're shutting down due to insufficient funding and increasing hardware costs
• This mad lad spun up a static web site – on a disposable vape...

Meet Versity S3 Gateway, a self-hosted bridge for accessing local filesystems through object storage APIs. A lightweight alternative to heavier platforms like Garage or RustFS, Versity S3 Gateway sits between local files and projects that require object storage, translating API calls on-the-fly.
