  1. Planning & Reasoning Engine: This is the "brain" of the operation, typically powered by an LLM. It receives a goal and breaks it down into a sequence of logical steps. It decides what to do next based on the current situation. Advanced techniques like Chain-of-Thought (CoT) or Tree-of-Thoughts (ToT) allow the agent to explore different paths and choose the most promising one.

    • The agent moves to the next part of its plan: selecting and reading sources.
    • It might think, "The first link looks like a reputable university study. I'll use the read_webpage tool on that URL."
    • Action: It calls read_webpage(url_1).
    • Observation: It gets the full text of the article. It uses its LLM capabilities to summarize the key points and stores them in its memory, noting it has found "Source 1."
    • Refinement: The agent repeats this loop. It might find a link is broken (an error). Its reflection capability would note the error, discard that link, and try the next one on its list until it has successfully gathered data from three sources.

This cycle continues until the final step of the plan—drafting and reviewing the report—is complete. The agent then presents the final output to the user.

Building an agent from scratch is a complex undertaking, but a growing ecosystem of tools and frameworks is making it dramatically easier.

These libraries provide the core architecture for managing agents, tools, and memory.

  • LangChain: The most popular and mature framework. It offers extensive components for chaining LLM calls, managing memory, and creating and deploying agents with a wide variety of tools.
  • LlamaIndex: While it started with a focus on data ingestion for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), LlamaIndex has evolved to include powerful agentic capabilities, making it excellent for building agents that reason over complex, private data.
  • AutoGen (Microsoft): This framework takes a different approach by focusing on multi-agent systems. You can define different agents with specific roles (e.g., a Coder, a Tester, a ProjectManager) that collaborate by "talking" to each other to solve a problem.

The Underlying Infrastructure Challenge

Agentic workflows are far more resource-intensive than simple API calls. They involve long-running processes, complex state management, and connections to multiple external services like databases and APIs. Deploying them reliably and at scale presents a significant infrastructure challenge.
