Keychron has announced two new additions to its mechanical keyboard lineup, the K2 Ultra 8K and K8 Ultra 8K. The new models are designed for users seeking low-latency wireless performance, extensive customization options, and premium construction without moving into the highest price brackets of the enthusiast keyboard market. The two keyboards share the same feature set but differ in layout. The K2 Ultra 8K adopts a compact 75% form factor, while the K8 Ultra 8K utilizes an 80% tenkeyless layout that retains dedicated navigation keys and function-row accessibility. Both models are available for $119.99. A key feature is support for an 8,000 Hz polling rate, allowing for faster input reporting in both gaming and productivity workloads. The keyboards support tri-mode connectivity, enabling operation through wired USB, Bluetooth, or a dedicated wireless connection. Keychron pairs this with ZMK firmware and claims wireless battery life of up to 760 hours depending on configuration and usage conditions.
The keyboards feature a hybrid chassis design combining CNC-machined aluminum alloy and ABS plastic construction. Internally, Keychron incorporates a six-layer damping system intended to reduce vibration, improve acoustics, and create a more refined typing experience. Additional hardware includes a steel positioning plate, integrated RGB lighting, and hot-swappable switch sockets that allow users to replace compatible mechanical switches without soldering. Both models introduce Keychron's new Apex switch family. These switches use transparent polycarbonate upper housings, POM stems, and nylon lower housings. The company states that reinforced stem walls help reduce key wobble and improve switch stability. Buyers can choose from three variants: Red for linear operation, Brown for moderate tactile feedback, and Banana for a stronger tactile response. Durability is further addressed through the use of double-shot PBT keycaps in the OSA profile. Compared with traditional ABS keycaps, PBT is generally more resistant to surface wear and shine, while double-shot manufacturing ensures legends remain permanently molded into the keycap structure. With support for wireless 8K polling, long battery life, hot-swappable hardware, and premium construction materials, the K2 Ultra 8K and K8 Ultra 8K aim to bridge the gap between enthusiast-focused custom keyboards and mainstream gaming peripherals.
