Thankfully, in 2025 and 2026, we've seen some great new platform releases, like Intel's Panther Lake and AMD's Strix Halo. Both bring some seriously potent iGPUs to the table. On the other hand, dedicated mobile GPUs haven't really seen anything majorly new. So, snagging a 2025 model on sale could be a seriously smart move - especially right now, with RAM and SSD prices absolutely galloping.
The MSI Crosshair 16 HX AI (D2XW) is a capable mid-ranger from last year, but its hardware is still very much up to date. You can spec it all the way up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX. Our review unit packs the Ultra 7 255HX, which has four fewer E-cores, but offers the same P-core count and L3 cache size. That's plenty of horsepower even for high-end GPUs. However, the graphics options here are a bit more modest: a GeForce RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 paired with a 115 W TGP. Given the punchy CPU, a GPU bottleneck should be nonexistent.

The device offers good upgradeability under the hood, featuring two SODIMM slots and two M.2 slots for storage expansion. Nothing is soldered down - meaning you can easily swap the battery, remove the cooling, or upgrade the Wi-Fi card. Port selection is also solid, featuring four USB ports, a LAN port, and an HDMI output.
The display is a vivid 2560×1600 panel that almost fully covers both the sRGB and DCI-P3 gamuts. Throw in a 240 Hz refresh rate, and you've got a panel that's perfect for both gaming and pro color grading. Interestingly, MSI's manual notes that this screen is actually optional, while the default display steps down to 1200p. However, tracking down a machine with that base 1200p screen seems rarer than finding cheap gas nowadays.
When it comes to features, the machine is well-equipped for the price, though it's not quite the full package. A MUX switch is on board, along with dedicated (dGPU) and iGPU-only modes. That's great news for anyone needing max graphics performance or the best possible battery life. Still, Advanced Optimus has been stripped out, meaning you cannot cycle between graphics modes on the fly without a reboot. There's no sign of G-SYNC either.
On the bright side, you still get a great SteelSeries keyboard and a capable audio setup. The privacy shutter and the beefy Cooler Boost 5 cooling system are welcome additions, too.
We've previously tested laptops with the RTX 5070 Ti and 5060, but this marks our first time benchmarking the standard RTX 5070. This review will show just how capable this chip is, whether it's worth the extra cash over the 5060, or if stepping up to the RTX 5070 Ti remains the best choice for price versus raw power.
