Mina the Hollower, a new retro action-adventure 2D platformer from the creators of Shovel Knight, is coming to Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox on May 29, but ahead of the game's launch, it has been reviewed by a number of publications, who have consistently rated the game highly enough that it has reached the number-one spot in Metacritic's 2026 game rankings, beating out both Forza Horizon 6 and Pokémon Pokopia. As we've seen before, though, the official Metacritic score does not always line up with the user score, although Shovel Knight is a legendary retro game, so the developer, Yacht Club Games, clearly has some idea of what the fans want.

At the time of writing, Mina the Hollower has a Metascore of 92, with reviews calling it an instant classic and praising it for its polished retro gameplay, challenging and varied boss fights, and well executed exploration and action. Mina the Hollower features 8-bit, pixel-perfect graphics, with appropriately forgiving minimum hardware requirements, and sees players explore an underground world, facing off against foes using a variety of weapons, side-arms, and abilities, and uncovering secrets along the way.
