TrueNAS R60: High-Speed NVMe Storage for AI Workloads
Pee Jay Latombo · 2026-01-27 · via TrueNAS – Open Enterprise Storage

Introducing the TrueNAS R60: a high-density NVMe platform for AI, HPC, and analytics workloads.

The Bottleneck Has Moved

GPU availability dominated infrastructure conversations for years. That constraint is easing. The new bottleneck is storage: the ability to move, protect, and reuse data fast enough to keep compute productive.

Recent industry research confirms it – storage performance ranks as the second-largest technical limitation in enterprise AI architectures. When data can’t flow, GPUs idle, experiments stall, and timelines slip.

The TrueNAS R60 addresses this directly. It delivers the throughput modern AI and analytics workloads demand, in a dense 1U footprint, without compromising the control and predictability that protect your investment over time.

Performance That Removes the Excuse

The R60 focuses on two things: density and speed.

Up to 60 GB/s throughput – triple the previous R30 generation – means training data, inference requests, and analytics queries no longer wait in line. Built on PCIe Gen5 NVMe with a fifth-generation controller, the R60 is architected for the I/O patterns that define modern workloads.

1.4 PB of NVMe in 1U. Start dense, scale seamlessly. Expansion shelves extend capacity to 7 PB without re-architecting your environment.

Optional 400GbE networking connects to high-bandwidth fabrics for deployments where network throughput must match storage throughput.

For teams running RAG pipelines, continuous training, MLOps workflows, or large-scale analytics, this translates to faster iteration and higher utilization of expensive compute resources.

Software That Sustains It

Raw speed without intelligent management creates new problems. The TrueNAS 25.10 “Goldeye” release optimizes the platform for modern multi-core, NVMe-powered systems:

Parallel ARC eviction enhances our caching algorithm for multi-threaded workloads, delivering 20–25% throughput improvements in mixed environments.

NVMe over Fabrics support – both TCP and RDMA – enables microsecond-class latency for latency-sensitive workloads like vector search and real-time inference.

API-driven automation through JSON-RPC 2.0 WebSockets lets you integrate storage provisioning into GitOps and CI/CD workflows. The TrueNAS CSI driver enables dynamic, NVMe-backed persistent volumes for Kubernetes environments.

These aren’t features for their own sake. They’re the foundation for storage that operates at the pace of modern development – without requiring manual intervention at every step.

Control That Doesn’t Erode

Speed solves today’s problem. But infrastructure decisions compound over years. The R60 is designed to protect your flexibility, not quietly erode it.

Your data stays on-premises and portable.
Proprietary datasets – the ones that differentiate your AI – remain under your control. OpenZFS ensures your data isn’t locked into a format only we can read. If your needs change, your data moves with you.

Your costs stay predictable.
Inline deduplication and compression deliver typical reduction ratios exceeding 2.5:1, stretching your NVMe investment. But more importantly: no per-query fees, no consumption surprises, no forced upgrade cycles.

Your data stays intact.
OpenZFS continuously verifies and repairs data integrity at the block level. Bit rot and silent corruption – the invisible threats that compound over time – are detected and corrected automatically.

This is what we mean when we talk about peace of mind: infrastructure where the risk of unpleasant surprises shrinks rather than grows.

A Different Relationship With Your Vendor

Storage platforms don’t exist in isolation. They require design decisions, integration work, and operational support over their lifecycle.

TrueNAS Enterprise customers work with a team that operates as an extension of their own – engineers available by phone who understand both the technology and the context you’re operating in. From initial architecture through deployment and ongoing operations, the model is partnership, not ticket queues.

You can evaluate this claim directly through our reviews on Gartner Peer Insights or by installing the latest TrueNAS software yourself. Our Community Edition runs the same OpenZFS foundation and core software as our Enterprise systems. Test the technology on your own terms. When you’re ready for enterprise support and hardware, the conversation is straightforward because you already understand what you’re buying.

The ability to leave is what makes the decision to stay meaningful.

Available Now

The TrueNAS R60 is available today through TrueNAS and our global partner network.

Organizations investing in AI infrastructure are seeing meaningful returns – but only when pilots become production. The R60 is built to accelerate that transition without sacrificing the transparency, portability, and predictability that matter over the long term.
