Updated 6 am ET, June 24: We've added the TP-Link Deco BE25 Outdoor.

Orbi 770 Series

The Netgear Orbi 770 Series (8/10 WIRED Recommends) is my pick of the best mesh Wi-Fi systems for most people looking to upgrade to Wi-Fi 7. This tri-band mesh (2.4, 5, and 6 GHz) offers a simple setup, delivers stable and speedy internet connectivity, and boasts expansive coverage. The stylish tower design blends in well, with internal antennas that ensure your whole home is able to get online. This is the best price I've ever seen for this system.

The Eero Pro 7 (8/10 WIRED Recommends) is an elegant mesh system, available in packs of two or three identical routers (two will be enough for most homes). The tower design allows for a better antenna array for wider coverage while still blending in easily on a table or shelf. Each unit has a USB-C port for power and two Ethernet ports rated at 5 Gbps. Designed as a hands-off, set-and-forget system, it fully supports Wi-Fi 7 across the 2.4-GHz, 5-GHz, and 6-GHz bands.

The Deco BE63 is a powerful tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system, and it's almost as good as Netgear's Orbi system above—but at a budget-friendly price. Performance is solid, though the 6-GHz band is short range. Each router includes a generous four 2.5-Gbps auto-sensing Ethernet ports and a USB 3.0 port. Although TP-Link, which manufactures overseas, has not yet secured an exemption from the FCC's foreign-made router ban, that only applies to new systems.

Eero 6 Mesh System, 2 rectangular white devices on a wooden table, one facing front and the other backwards showing the ports

The Eero Pro 6E mesh system is an older Wi-Fi 6E mesh, but it's every bit as easy to use and stable as the rest of Amazon’s Eero lineup. Eero makes some of my favorite mesh systems, ideal for busy families seeking a set-and-forget mesh. The Pro 6E is a tri-band system with a 6-GHz band for fast Wi-Fi at close range. But you need an Eero Plus subscription at $10 per month or $100 per year to unlock some features, including parental controls, advanced security, and ad blocking.

The most effective way to get Wi-Fi in your backyard is to snag an outdoor router like this one. Anyone with a TP-Link Deco system can add this to their existing mesh network and extend Wi-Fi into the their outdoor space. It's waterproof and dustproof, with an IP65 rating, and can cover up to 2,800 square feet.

TP-Link

Archer BE9700 (BE600)

This Wi-Fi 7 router offers 2.4-GHz, 5-GHz, and 6-GHz bands in a basic affordable package. There are six adjustable antennas, and TP-Link has been very generous with the ports (one 10 Gbps, four 2.5 Gbps, and a USB 3.0), though it’s a little annoying that the USB is on the side. This model also offers excellent close-range speeds on the 6-GHz band, though it was a little disappointing on both the 5-GHz and 2.4-GHz bands.

My favorite travel router is the dual-band, Wi-Fi 7 Asus RT-BE58 Go. Connect your devices at home, and a travel router provides convenience on vacation. You can plug in an internet connection via Ethernet, connect to public Wi-Fi, or employ USB tethering. It’s especially handy when you want to connect multiple devices to hotel Wi-Fi, which limits your device connections.
