CI Crates.io Documentation

One command for messy logs. Parse, filter, transform, and summarize logs across JSON, logfmt, syslog, CSV, and plain text — with embedded Rhai scripting when simple filters aren't enough.

A quick tour

Want to follow along? These commands use sample logs from the repo — git clone https://github.com/dloss/kelora or grab the examples/ directory.

You don't even know what's in the file yet. Start there:

kelora examples/web_access_large.log.gz --discover

1200 events scanned | format: combined (auto-detected) | timestamp: ts -> meta.parsed_ts

No flags, no regex — Kelora decompressed the gzip, recognized the Apache combined format on its own, and mapped every field with real sample values. (user is 52% missing: half these requests are unauthenticated.)

Mixed formats in one file are the normal case, not the exception:

kelora -f json,line examples/mixed_format.log --filter 'e._format == "json"' -k timestamp,level,msg -F csv
timestamp,level,msg
2024-01-15T10:00:02Z,INFO,Order 4412 captured for user alice
2024-01-15T10:00:03Z,WARN,Retrying upstream auth.svc after HTTP 503
2024-01-15T10:00:05Z,ERROR,Upstream auth.svc timeout after 5000ms
2024-01-15T10:00:08Z,INFO,Order 4413 captured for user bob
2024-01-15T10:00:09Z,WARN,Connection pool at 85% capacity

JSON lines and plain text interleaved in the same file — give Kelora a cascade of parsers (-f json, line) and it tries each one per line, tagging every event with the winner in _format. Keep the structured ones, drop the noise, and emit clean CSV in a single pass.

And when those logs are a wall of near-duplicate errors that differ only by hostname, UUID, or timestamp — cut straight to what's actually breaking:

kelora examples/syslog_errors.log --drain -k msg
templates (4 items):
438: Connection timeout to database host <fqdn> after <duration>
  187: Upstream <fqdn> returned <num> for request <uuid>
94: Failed to acquire lock on resource <path> after <duration>
   23: Payment gateway <fqdn> rejected transaction <uuid> insufficient_funds

-k msg tells --drain which field to mine — here the syslog message — and it groups near-identical lines by inferring where the values varied, so 742 noisy lines collapse into the four patterns causing the noise.

One tool: understand an unknown file, tame mixed formats, and surface what matters — no temp files, no intermediate scripts, no manual regex.

Kelora also handles live streams: tail -f app.log | kelora -j -l error,warn.

Run kelora without arguments for an interactive REPL with readline, glob expansion, and history — handy on Windows where shell quoting is awkward.

By default Kelora reformats every event into a readable, colored key=value view — regardless of whether the input was JSON, logfmt, or plain text. In a terminal, wide events wrap onto indented continuation lines; when the output is piped or redirected it stays one line per event, so tools like wc -l count correctly. Pass -J to keep JSON output, -F logfmt/csv/tsv for other formats, --wrap to force wrapping through a pipe, or --no-wrap to disable it.

When Kelora helps

Reach for Kelora when you'd otherwise be writing a throwaway Python script. It's the middle ground between "grep is enough" and "I need a real observability platform."

  • Chained pipelines collapse into one command. grep | awk | jq | script.py becomes kelora, with state preserved across the pipeline instead of lost between pipes.
  • Messy formats parse cleanly. Mixed JSON and plaintext in the same file, key=value pairs inside message strings, nested JSON fanned out to flat rows — without regex gymnastics.
  • Embedded scripting when you need it. Simple filters are one-liners. When logic gets stateful — session reconstruction, per-service error rates, request/response correlation — there's a full scripting layer.
  • Plays well with your existing tools. Pipe ripgrep or jq upstream to pre-filter; pipe Kelora's JSON or CSV output into whatever comes next.

Kelora trades raw speed for programmability. Simple filters and format conversions handle multi-GB files comfortably; heavy Rhai scripting tops out in the low hundreds of thousands of lines before you'll want to pre-filter. For pure text search use grep; for pure JSON queries use jq.

See Power-User Techniques for JWT parsing, cryptographic pseudonymization, pattern normalization, and deterministic sampling.

Installation

macOS (Homebrew):

brew tap dloss/kelora && brew install kelora

Linux (binary):

curl -LO https://github.com/dloss/kelora/releases/latest/download/kelora-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz
tar xzf kelora-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz
sudo mv kelora /usr/local/bin/

Rust (any platform):

On Windows, download kelora-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc.zip, extract, and add to PATH.

For Debian/Ubuntu (.deb), Fedora/RHEL (.rpm), ARM Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and other platforms: see all releases.

Kelora follows semver starting with v1.0 — CLI flags and Rhai functions are stable.

Use with AI coding agents

Kelora ships an Agent Skill for Claude Code and compatible coding agents. Drop the skills/log-analysis/ directory into your agent's skills directory and it gains a curated cheat-sheet for parsing, filtering, and summarizing logs with Kelora — including when to reach for --discover, --drain, and the --freq/--describe/--card shorthands.

How Kelora is built

Kelora is an experiment in agentic AI development: AI agents generate all implementation and tests, and I steer requirements rather than writing or reviewing code. Validation relies on an extensive automated test suite plus cargo audit and cargo deny. Kelora is local-only with no networking or telemetry, enforced by a CI check.

This is a single-developer spare-time project, and support is best-effort. Review the Security Policy before using it on sensitive data in production.
