Hi everyone, we're pretty clear about our use of AI as soon as it became available to us. It's been like that a while and it's obvious when you see AGENTS.md in each repo and cloud has been at the forefront of AI for a long time. This may unobvious to some of you so let's get it out of the way.
What started as a short spike turned into a 4 day sprint to rebuild all of bluefin into the perfect automated "Operating System Factory". And we almost have it. I call it The Pattern because of course.
Here's the report, https://github.com/projectbluefin/bluefin/blob/main/THEPATTERN.md
And here's what we tell the clankers: https://github.com/projectbluefin/.github/blob/main/AGENTS.md
First, we tried to keep the slop in projectbluefin org but some of this spilled into common, which annoyed people. So apologies for that. It was unintentional. None of this was done in production Bluefin image repos.
A bunch of quick things happened in succession that led to this spike. Because it has become clear to me that This is The Way. So I had to make it. Please read THEPATTERN again if you haven't done so already. :)
The first was my trip to scale where the ai found an issue in the middle of a trip and we were able to fix and ship it in like 2 hours. In an LTS! And we give it away! That's incredible.
Two other things happened. The first was my trip to Berlin for FOSDEM where I gave my talk about the future of operating systems. Spending a few days with the GNOME, KDE, freedesktop, and UAPI got me re-energized. Especially when we all sat around beers. Like many oss conversations. It was me, Lennart, Adrian Vovk, Tobias, and a few others. Similarly I had lunch with Aleix Pol, and Harald Sitter from KDE. And we all love bst.
The third was this blog post: https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/fedora-hummingbird-linux-brings-agentic-linux-builders
Then read my thoughts after the Hummingbird meeting: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/fedora-hummingbird-community-meeting-2026-05-28-12-00-utc/192152/6
Please read that. And then look at what Universal Blue is. We almost have this. AI brings a lot of opinions but we have been promising the new world since we started, and we turn 5 this month. We've mostly gotten us here in one piece. But the wildlife is different here, and that means AI native. So we either evolve or die and after what I have done with James and the others in a few days requires discussion!
Someone else would have made this anyway we picked containers because it's the most common production tech of course AI is good at it. 5 years of effort in a few days? This is a distillation of that effort into a self improving model and so far it's doing a decent job. This feels like the kneejerk when you come out of lightspeed because this happened so quickly!
Discussions like this inevitably brings troublemakers, so we need to ensure that our community is represented properly. We're not interested in what the internet thinks we want to know what the people who use it think. It will be very obvious who is reading and who is not:
First, if you are an expert in the problem space please state so. This doesn't cover just AI, but CI/CD, etc. Also if you wouldn't mind telling us where you work and the affect tools like this are having in our industry.
If you've used Bluefin also please leave your response, it's Linux I'm sure we punched you in the face so leave your feedback! And please also post how you use Bluefin, how long you've been around, do your kids like dinosaurs. What do you like about it. etc. Then post your opinion on AI, or any Bluefin feedback, and feel free to ask questions!
(I'll keep this post updated over time, and add links, clarify things based on your feedback. Then we'll post a blog post - then we'll see what feedback we get, so this gives us a clear line. The people with skin in the game read this forum.)
In case it's not clear where I stand, it's in my favorite wallpaper, Collapse, we evolve or die.
