並非所有現場的標記木材都是由人類造成的。研究人員還研究了一塊更大的柳木碎片,其表面刻有凹槽。經過詳細分析後,他們得出結論,這些標記是由一隻大型肉食動物留下的,可能是熊,而不是人類。

"最古老的木質工具來自英國、贊比亞、德國和中國等地,包括武器、挖掘棒和工具柄。然而,它們都比我們在馬拉圖薩1號發現的要年輕,「安奈麗克·米爾克斯」說。目前唯一已知更古老的、人類使用的木材證據來自贊比亞的卡拉姆波瀑布地點,年代約為47.6萬年前。但那塊木材並非作為工具使用,而是作為結構材料。"

「我們發現了目前所知最古老的木製工具,以及來自東南歐的第一個類似證據,」哈瓦蒂說。 「這再次證明了馬拉索斯1地點的保存條件有多麼出色。而且大型肉食動物在屠宰大象的旁邊留下了痕跡,與人類活動一起,表明兩者之間存在激烈的競爭。」

國際研究團隊也包括來自塞薩洛尼基亞亞里士多德大學、伊奧尼亞大學、希臘文化部以及雅典美國古典研究學院的科學家。
