Muni Long is opening up about a major health scare. The Grammy-winning singer revealed to Good Morning America on Tuesday (June 23) that she underwent a double lung transplant after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

Muni Long had been on Brandy and Monica’s co-headlining The Boy Is Mine Tour, which trekked throughout North America last fall. “I should have never taken that tour,” she told Robin Roberts. “But there was so much going on in my life where I had to do it.”

After briefly stepping away from the tour and returning to the stage, things took a turn for the worse in the frigid Northeast around Thanksgiving for the “Hrs & Hrs” singer, who suffers from Lupus.

“I couldn’t even get out of the bed to make my call time for stage,” she explained on GMA. “The last show, I just barely made it. I was only able to do two songs. My team and my family were like, ‘You just need to come home and rest.'”

Muni Long came home for Thanksgiving and “woke up in the hospital,” where the singer was informed she needed to undergo a double lung transplant, as she only had days to live if she didn’t have the procedure done as soon as possible.

“I said, ‘How long do I have to live?’ And they go, ‘A week.’ My jaw dropped,” she recalled. “Literally, I was like, ‘That’s rude.’ But they were kind of like, ‘This is not a joke. You need to make a choice. You can either go to hospice or you can get these lungs.'”

The 37-year-old said she is doing “fabulous” six months post-surgery. Muni Long also revealed she had vocal surgery, but doesn’t have any symptoms after the medical procedures.

“I’m doing fabulous. I’m six months post-op. Tomorrow is my last appointment for all the things,” she added. “No symptoms. Asymptomatic. No infections. None of that. Then I have my vocal checkup — six months will be in August, because I had to have vocal surgery, as well.”

Muni Long returned with her “Richest” single on Monday (June 22), which marks her first solo single of the year. She explained that the tender track was recorded before her surgery, which has changed her voice.

However, she can’t return to the stage just yet, as doctors want her to rest for about a year before performing again. If she could go back, Muni Long wishes she could’ve spoken up sooner about her health issues. “I think the bulk of my trauma came from holding everything,” the Florida singer said. “I did not speak up for myself.”

Muni Long’s last album, Revenge, arrived in August 2024 and was released by Def Jam.
