‘Tu Cárcel,’ 40 Years Later: Los Bukis’ Classic vs. Morat’s Revamped Version
Jessica Roiz · 2026-06-18 · via Billboard

Billboard compares the 1986 and 2026 versions to compare what's different.

Trending on Billboard

When Marco Antonio Solís penned “Tu Cárcel,” he probably never thought it would become a timeless Los Bukis classic over the years — and this year, it received the Morat treatment.

One of many notable covers — following the 2004 rock version by Argentine band Los Enanitos Verdes and música Mexicana versions by Los Tigres del Norte and Yahritza y Su Esencia, to name a few — the Colombian band revamps the classic 1986 tune with its signature pop-rock sound, ultimately earning its second No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated June 20.

The new version is part of the soundtrack to Disney+ and Hulu original series Dear Killer Nannies: Criado Por Sicarios, based on the late drug kingpin and politician Pablo Escobar’s upbringing.

“It’s a song that has been part of our lives for as long as we can remember,” the group comprised of Juan Pablo Villamil, Juan Pablo Isaza, Simón Vargas and Martín Vargas previously told Billboard.

Now, Billboard compares the two versions. See what’s different, below:

Artist & Title: Los Bukis, “Tu Cárcel”

Release Year: 1986

On the Charts: Peaked at No. 3 on Hot Latin Songs in July 1987

Song: Released as the first single off of Los Bukis’ 10th studio album, Me Volvi a Acordar de Ti (I Remembered You Again), “Tu Cárcel” was penned by vocalist Marco Antonio Solís, and narrates the story of a woman who’s too vain and high maintenance to recognize a love that’s real, unconditional and humble. The grupero ballad became one of Los Bukis’ biggest commercial hits, which today is a timeless staple in Latin music history.

Video: Filmed between a ranch and nightclub, the visual hows Solís dealing with betrayal and heartbreak. A full fledged, four-minute telenovela, the clip captures his ex-girlfriend with the new guy — who has money, but is toxic — while Solís tries to move on and heal to his own lyrics.

Artist & Title: Morat, “Tu Cárcel”

Release Year: 2026

On the Charts: Peaked at No. 1 and No. 3 on Latin Pop Airplay and Hot Latin Pop Songs, respectively, in June 2026

Song: Colombian band Morat not only gives “Tu Cárcel” the rock treatment, but also introduces it to a new generation. Produced by Argentine hitmaker Nico Cotton, the song is an upbeat pop-rock tune powered by hard-hitting drums, riffling electric guitars and the band’s melodious vocals. The lyrics’ sentiment stay intact despite the 40 years that have passed.

Video: The visual shows what Morat knows best: give a live concert to a sold-out crowd. True to form, the four roqueros are performing and jamming to the song on stage while a soaring audience of all ages chants at the top of its lungs.
