It’s almost time to officially enter Ariana Grande’s Petal era.
On Wednesday (May 27), the pop sensation shared an eerie new teaser for the official music video for her forthcoming new single, “Hate That I Made You Love Me.” The clip opens with Weapons actor Justin Long driving a car and peering into the rearview mirror. As the trap-adjacent beat builds, Long adjusts the mirror to reveal Grande’s piercing brown eyes staring back at his frightened face.
The snippet closes with the title of the Grande’s single splashed across the screen in a yellow font reminiscent of various posters of 1986’s The Hitcher, which was remade in 2007. Grande also tagged her frequent collaborator, Christian Breslauer, who helmed her MTV Video Music Award-winning Bright Days Ahead short film in 2025.
Justin Long’s appearance continues a yearslong tradition of Grande casting famed actors as her music video co-stars. Jonathan Bennett guest-starred in 2019’s “Thank U, Next,” Charles Melton surprised fans in 2020’s “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” Penn Badgley starred in 2024’s “The Boy Is Mine” and Evan Peters appeared in “We Can’t Be Friends” from the same year.
“Hate That I Made You Love Me” serves as the lead single from the Grammy winner’s forthcoming eighth studio album, Petal. Executive produced by Grande and ILYA, Petal marks Grande’s first studio album since her Oscar-nominated performance as G(a)linda the Good Witch in 2024’s Wicked and 2025’s Wicked: For Good.
Her last LP, Eternal Sunshine, debuted atop the Billboard 200 in 2024 and spawned a pair of Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers in “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends.” Notably, the album returned to the top of the Billboard 200 the following year after the release of its Brighter Days Ahead deluxe edition, which spawned the Hot 100 top 20 hit “Twilight Zone” (No. 18).
Petal arrives on July 31, right in the middle of her 41-date Eternal Sunshine Tour. That trek, her first since 2019, kicks off on June 6 at California’s Oakland Arena, visiting major cities across North America and Europe before closing with 10 shows at London’s O2 Arena.
