Lorca Doc ‘The Broken Voice’ to Sideral

Sideral Cinema has acquired international sales and Spanish distribution rights to “Lorca: The Broken Voice” (“La voz quebrada”), Manuel Menchón Romero’s feature documentary exploring a little-known chapter in the life of Federico García Lorca.

Written and directed by Menchón, the feature documentary is produced by Argentina’s K&S Films and Spain’s Pantalla Partida Producciones and Imagine! Films, with the participation of public broadcaster RTVE.

The film is framed as both a historical investigation and an impossible-love story, drawing on two notebooks and a suitcase full of documents that, according to a synopsis, shed light on Lorca’s murder and on his last, unknown great love.

The documentary is narrated through letters, diaries and secrets left by its protagonists, using historical and previously unknown materials to revisit the life and death of one of Spain’s most beloved and internationally recognized poets.

A key element in the film is one of Menchón’s major discoveries during the research process: previously unseen footage of Lorca in motion while traveling with his theater company, La Barraca, in the early 1930s.

The footage was found by Menchón in the private archive of the family of Ramón Menéndez Pidal, the eminent Spanish philologist and historian.

It was located inside a can of photographic and film material and later restored. In the images, a car from the 1920s climbs a dirt mountain road; through the rear window, several people can be seen packed inside, among them Lorca, traveling with members of La Barraca.

The footage gives “Lorca: The Broken Voice” a powerful archival hook, given the scarcity of moving images of the Granada-born writer, who was murdered in August 1936, at the age of 38, during the early months of the Spanish Civil War.

Sideral said the acquisition reaffirms its commitment to building a robust catalogue of high-quality, relevant and contemporary Spanish fiction and non-fiction content for all audiences.

“Following our goal as sales agents, ‘Lorca: The Broken Voice’ is a historical revelation, visually stunning, emotionally haunting and profoundly universal,” said Marjory Maceres, Sideral’s sales executive.

María Oliva, Sideral’s head of distribution, described the film as “unique and moving,” adding: “Watching it is as thrilling as discovering a treasure. Lorca and his story are part of the world cultural heritage.”
