From a Reboot of TV phenom ‘The Triplets’ to a New ‘Tad the Lost Explorer’ Movie, 10 Upcoming Catalan Animation Titles to Track
John Hopewell · 2026-06-19 · via Variety

“Ship is ready to sail, explorers!” shouts gleefully little Tessa, leaping onto the ladder of her bunk bed, at the very beginning of Catalonia’s “The Triplets” reboot.

“I think you’ll enjoy the trip. Tessa is a very experienced sailor,” adds sister Annie, referring to her rubber duck. “Captain Nelly ready for landing,” adds Nelly, from the bottom bunk of their bed. “Are you joining us?”

Sneak-peaked by Variety, if its first scene is anything to go by, the awaited new version of quaint series “The Triplets” will retain the contagious zest for life and imagination of the most famous triplets in Spanish animation, 7-year-old Tessa, Nelly and Annie, heroes of the 1990s international sales phenomenon.

Popular on Variety

Also readying for a later 2026 release or after, “Tad and the Magic Lamp,” whose first three movies have clocked up a combined $118 million worldwide.

Other potential highlight takes in a bevy of animated feature spun-offs, such as “Jasmine & Jumbo: The Movie,” from the Catalan TV series whose Seasons 1 and 2 scored a slew of major territory sales, including France – in a significant deal with France Télévisions

Superthings” marks the movie from the hit series, based on the toyline, renewed for Seasons 3 and 4 and sold to ITVX, Gulli, Cartoonito and Netflix Spain.

Meanwhile, Sofia Carrillo, Mexico’s preeminent stop-motion filmmaker, is advancing on “Insectarium,” which dazzled at a Cannes 2026 Annecy Animation Showcase.

A hand-drawn 2D animation feature combining Lyona’s recognizable minimalist illustration style with a cinematic visual language that allows the emotions and inner life of the protagonist to unfold in a playful and expressive way, Variety has noted. From Catalan animation bastion Mr. Miyagi, now in post-production, skedded for a 2027 release.

“Gus the Guide Dog”

Director: Roger Torras

To some extent an extension of “Cerulia,” Carrillo has told Variety, exploring its aesthetic universe and using the same puppets and sometimes same sets. Mexico’s Pimienta Films (“Roma,” “Emilia Perez”) and Barcelona’s Inicia Films (“The Treasure of Barracuda,” “20,000 Species of Bees”) produce.

Oliva, whose credits include the Cannes-selected “Josep,” a 2021 animated feature Cesar Award winner. “Through the eyes of Moss the dog, and without resorting to sugarcoating, we want children to understand the cruel realities of war and the differences between right and wrong,” Oliva has told Variety.

Director: Alba Sotorra

Producer: Alba Sotorra S.L. Spain, Artichoke, Slovakia, Pájaro, Chile, Bombillo Amarillo, Colombia.

Anyone attending Ventana Sur’s Ibermedia Next panel, will have been blown away by images from “Pic Punk Delta,” such as a smudged vision of a street scene at a smoke engulfed local carnival, or the delta landscape, part impressionistic clouds, part near photo realistic cottage farms. Inspired Sotorra’s own childhood, the story of a young girl living on Spain’s Ebro Delta who rebels against a devastating water drainage scheme, using motion capture for animation and 2D shades for 3D and highly detailed 2D backgrounds, Sotorra has said.
