Prominent Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín is set to kick off production on his next feature for Netflix, “Once” (as in the number 11) later this year. The film will follow 11 stories that occurred in the wake of the momentous coup d’état in Chile on September 11, 1973.

Through these intertwined stories, “Once” follows the 18 consecutive hours following the military coup, ending in the bombing of the official government headquarters, La Moneda Palace, and the demise of then president Salvador Allende. 

Noting Netflix’s successful partnership with Larraín on “The Count” (“El Conde”) and TV series “My Sad Dead,” Netflix’s VP of Latin American original content Francisco Ramos said, “We are committed to Latin America storytelling of the highest caliber and quality. Pablo has assembled an amazing cast and crew, including [DP] Rodrigo Prieto and [Production Designer] Guy Hendrix, and his original screenplay co-written with Guillermo Calderón is just extraordinary.”

“Maria” and “Spencer” director Larraín has also brought in Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Andrew Jackson, a regular collaborator of Christopher Nolan for the first time. It will also be Larrain’s first collaboration with the multi-Oscar nominated Prieto, who has worked on Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Silence” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

“Thanks to the trust and support from Netflix and to the work of truly great artists, I’m now facing a big and wonderful challenge: a war movie,” Larraín told Variety.

To be produced by the Larraín brothers’ Fabula, “Once” features a stellar cast led by Alfredo Castro, a regular on Larraín’s films, including “The Count.”

The rest of the players, some of whom have worked on past Fabula productions, includes Marcelo Alonso (“The Club”), Octavia Bernasconi (“The Pack”), Roberto Farías (“The Club”) Fernanda Finsterbusch (“The Pack”) Alejandro Goic (“The Club”) Camila Milenka, (“7 Weeks”) Valentina Muhr, (“After the Fog”), Marcial Tagle (“No”) and Lukas Vergara (‘Disconnected”).

Joining Larraín as producers are Fabula’s Juan de Dios Larraín and Rocío Jadue. Alejandro Wise and Mariane Hartard serve as executive producers.

This would not be the first time for Larraín to delve into Chile’s traumatic past, including “No” and most recently, “The Count,” in which military dictator Augusto Pinochet is a tortured 250-year-old vampire.

“Once” is slated to start principal photography in the second half of the year.
