Emmy Predictions: Netflix, Apple and HBO Battle for Network Dominance as ‘Pluribus’ Chases an ‘NYPD Blue’ Record
57 categories now being projected as nomination voting opens on June 11
Variety Awards Circuit section is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year, featuring the following: the official predictions for the upcoming Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Tony Awards ceremonies, curated by Variety chief awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages reflect the current standings in the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any individual contender. As other formal (and informal) polls suggest, competitions are fluid and subject to change based on buzz and events. Predictions are updated every Thursday.
Primetime Emmys Predictions Commentary All Categories (Updated: May 28, 2026): The Emmys eligibility period is winding down, yet several races remain wide open.
Topping strategists’ minds is which show, and more importantly which network, will lead the nomination tally. For now, the crown is up for grabs in a tight race among last year’s leader HBO Max, Netflix and Apple TV, each armed with its share of juggernauts and potential nomination hogs.
HBO Max enters as the home of reigning drama series champion “The Pitt,” which is angling to double the 13 nominations it earned in its inaugural year. That outcome looks highly probable, with a deep bench of performers in the hunt, among them Patrick Ball, Sepideh Moafi, Taylor Dearden and Shawn Hatosy. The network is also hoping comedy frontrunner “Hacks” can go out on a high note and post its strongest Emmy showing yet. In limited series, “DTF St. Louis” and “Half Man” should each clear double digits. The open question is how much “Task,” “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” “Rooster” and others add to the haul.
Netflix’s strength, as always, is volume. “Stranger Things,” “Beef” and “The Diplomat” should perform well, and the streamer is also positioned to make noise with “The Beast in Me,” “Lord of the Flies,” “Black Rabbit” and more.
Apple TV is aiming to steer “Pluribus” to a 20-plus nomination haul, with an eye on whether it can break the all-time freshman drama series record long held by “NYPD Blue,” which landed 26 nominations in 1994. Beyond lead acting contenders Rhea Seehorn, Carlos-Manuel Vesga and Karolina Wydra, the series will need a lift from the guest acting, directing, writing and artisan branches to get there.
Variety has released the first ranked pages for outstanding movie, in addition to the first overall looks at the cinematography, editing and music races, bringing the total categories projected to 57 (with about 50 more to go).
Upcoming key dates: The eligibility window ends on May 31. Nomination voting runs June 11-22, with nominations announced July 8. Final-round voting will take place Aug. 17-26 ahead of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Governors Gala on Sept. 5-6. The Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sept. 14 on NBC.
Note: All official category placements in these predictions have yet to be confirmed.
