‘The Odyssey’ Breaks BFI Imax Records With $1 Million in ...

Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey” may not be out for another month, but it’s already smashing sales records in the U.K.

The BFI Imax, the U.K.’s largest screen — owned and operated by the British Film Institute and located in central London — has revealed that it sold 28,000 tickets in its first 24 hours, breaking the venue’s first day sales records with a total gross of £750,000 ($1 million).

This news follows four opening weekend screenings that had previously sold out in under an hour a full year in advance, including a special midnight showing that it set to kickstart a weekend of non-stop round-the-clock screenings.

“The Odyssey’s” first day BFI Imax takings have more than doubled the previous record held by “Dune: Part Two,” which took £366,000 ($490,000) gross in the first 24 hours of on sale and almost quadrupled Nolan’s previous film “Oppenheimer,” which took £254,000 ($340,000) gross in the same timeframe.

In the U.S., “The Odyssey” also broke records when premium large format ticket went on sale a full year in advance in 2025. Initial pre-sales saw roughly 150,000 tickets sold and $3.4 million generated in just 24 hours, the highest in four years. The massive demand led to ticketing websites crashing and wait times exceeding an hour, while scalper listings on websites such as eBay saw some tickets being resold for up to $1,500.

Boasting an eye-watering cast of stars, including the likes of Matt Damon, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron, “The Odyssey” is also the first feature to be shot entirely on Imax 70mm with Imax cameras.

“The Odyssey” is due for release on July 17.
