Aubrey Plaza Says ‘Kevin’ Is Canceled at Amazon After Fir...

Aubrey Plaza took to Instagram Saturday afternoon to announce that Amazon canceled her animated comedy series “Kevin” after just one season.

“Amazon Prime is not picking up ‘Kevin’ for another season,” wrote Plaza. “Very disappointing since we were just getting going. I want to say thank you to all the fans that watched our show and all of the incredible cast and crew that worked so hard to make this dream come alive.”

Amazon did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

“Kevin” follows a spoiled house cat who joins a family of strays in a New York City shelter after his owner breaks up with him. Plaza co-created the series with Joe Wengert and starred alongside Jason Schwartzman, Amy Sedaris, Aparna Nancherla, Gil Ozeri, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg and Ben Rodgers.

“I remember on the early days of ‘Parks & Rec’ when we all thought we would be cancelled because our ratings weren’t great. Our numbers,” Plaza added. “But we had some special humans over at NBC that believed in the show and let us grow and let audiences fall in love with our characters. I was hoping for this for ‘Kevin’ but sadly we are living in a different time in our industry. I hope the machines won’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner someday. Love you all very much. Meow.”

Variety TV critic Alison Herman wrote in her review that “Kevin” combined “gleefully raunchy with the sweetly sincere.” She added, “But ‘Kevin’ is also a tale of self-discovery and embracing independence. It’ll never be mistaken for a kid-friendly weekend cartoon; with a surprisingly specific New York setting, the feel is closer to a feline ‘Broad City.’ Yet there’s a feel-good arc to Kevin’s journey that carries through even its most absurd and over-the-top concepts, like a production of ‘Mame’ entirely staffed by horses.”
