Chrissy Metz to Make Broadway Debut in '& Juliet'

Chrissy Metz will make her Broadway debut in the jukebox musical “& Juliet.”

She’ll join the cast as Angélique for a limited run starting on June 18 and concluding on Sept. 13. Metz is best known for the NBC television show “This Is Us.” Her character Kate Pearson had ambitions of singing professionally, requiring Metz to perform songs like “Landslide” and “Time After Time” over the course of the series. Metz made her New York stage debut in a benefit reading of Neil LaBute’s “Fat Pig” for MCC in 2017.

“I’m so excited to be making my Broadway debut, and to do it in a show that is this joyful feels like an
absolute dream come true,” Metz said. “I think some of the hardest working, most creative people work in live theater and well, Broadway scares me to bits, which is why I have always wanted to do it. Pray for me!”

“& Juliet” is a revisionist take on Shakespeare’s classic tale of star-crossed lovers. It uses the music of Swedish mega-producer Max Martin to imagine what would happen if Juliet didn’t die at the end of “Romeo & Juliet.” Her second chance at life is scored to pop anthems like NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me,” Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Britney Spears’ “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” and “Overprotected” and Katy Perry’s “Roar.”

Though the production was blanked at the Tony Awards, “& Juliet” has been a rare enduring (and profitable) hit. Only four other musicals to open since the pandemic, “MJ,” “Six,” “The Outsiders” and “Just in Time,” have managed to recoup on Broadway.

Jeannette Bayardelle will play her final performance as Angelique on June 14. Other notable replacements in the role, Juliet’s nurse and mentor figure, include Charity Angél Dawson and Kandi Burruss. Other stars like TikToker Charli D’Amelio, former NSYNC member Joey Fatone and Broadway favorite James Monroe Iglehart have joined the cast in other parts during various points in the show’s run.
