Ester Expósito, Mario Casas and Anna Castillo Lead Prime Video’s New Originals Slate in Spain, Its No. 1 Non-English Powerhouse
John Hopewell · 2026-06-17 · via Variety

Prime Video Spain unveiled 13 new titles plus production updates in Madrid on Wednesday, led by the announcement of a second “Zeta” movie, starring Mario Casas (“Cross the Line”), details of “Enfrentados: Marfil,” starring Ester Expósito, and first look images of “Su Majestad,’ Season 2, headed by Anna Castillo (“Nowhere”).

At a Prime Video Presents event, it also confirmed “Operación Triunfo 2027,” hosted by Chenoa, broadcast live daily, a rarity for a streaming service, plus the return of a Spanish version of “LOL: Si te ríes, pierdes” with Antonio Resines and Georgina Rodríguez (“I Am Georgina”), who debuts as a co-host. “LOL” will bow in Christmas, Resines said.

Among new shows are “Si los muertos hablaran,” with Carmen Machi (“La Mesías”), Hugo Silva (“Marbella”) and Maribel Verdú (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” “Y tu mamá también”), the series “Mataleón” and a film version of Alex Mírez’s Wattpad smash.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in Spain, Prime Video also confirmed Spain as its No. 1 non-English powerhouse, with its originals yielding more hits in Prime Video’s Global Non-English Top 10 than any other country in the world.

It already confirmed this February that Prime Video Spain’s Spanish-language “Culpables” film franchise – “My Fault” (2023), “Your Fault” (2024) and “Our Fault” (2025), based on Mercedes Ron’s Wattpad novels –  had collectively shot past 100 million viewers. “Our Fault” featured as No. 1 in Prime Video’s Top 10 most-watched non-English language international originals over January 2025 to January 2026. All three films became No. 1 in more than 170 countries at launch, with over 90% of viewers coming from outside Spain.

Movies such as “Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin,” bowing 2024, and “Zeta,” made available March 26 this year, rank among the most-watched titles on the service internationally, it added.

“10 years ago, we arrived in Spain and shortly after took our first steps producing movies and TV series here,” said Nicole Clemens, vice president and head of international originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.

“Today, Spanish productions are not only delighting local audiences in Spain, but also feature prominently across our global non-English language rankings week after week and that is no coincidence: it is the result of backing local talent, authentic stories that work here first and then travel the world. With the new projects we are presenting today, like ‘Si los muertos hablaran’ or ‘Cuando solo quedemos nosotros,’ we continue to strengthen our already exceptional pipeline in Spain.”

New titles announced underscore a focus on action thrillers (“Apocalipsis Z: Un nuevo mundo,” “Zeta 2”); young adult, often sourced from Mercedes Ron, such as “Enfrentados: Marfil” and her “Dímelo” film trilogy; crime/true crime (“Si los muertos hablaran,” “Cuando solo quedemos nosotros” and “Mataleón”) and new auteur-driven projects, such as “Loba Negra,” the second season in the “La Reina Roja” franchise, directed by Koldo Serra, set for release Oct. 2.

Seeking to appeal to the whole of a now fractured market in Spain, as elsewhere, with multiple niches, Prime Video Spain also buys series for Spain.   “It’s important to have diversity,” Reverte said at Prime Video Presents.

“We have spent a decade working side by side with production companies, distributors and broadcasters in Spain, and the relationship we have today with the industry is something we are very proud of,” said Manuel Reverte, head of content acquisition in Spain and Portugal. “Thanks to those partnerships we can offer customers films like ‘Haciendo Amigos,’ which will be the event of the summer in cinemas, series and innovative formats like ‘Citas,’ which this year combines a theatrical release with an exclusive series, the new season of ‘Pombo’ or Season 18 of ‘La que se avecina.’ Ultimately, everything revolves around giving our customers the best possible experience.”

At Prime Video Presents, the streaming service aloso previewed several movies set for theatrical release in Spaom before playing on the streaming service, such as “Citas Barcelona,” set as a movie and exclusive series for Prime Video, and “Hechos Probados,” starring Amaia Salamanca (“Gran Hotel”).

Eight upcoming banner Prime Video Spain titles:

* “Zeta 2” A follow-up to spy action thriller ‘Zeta,’ with Mario Casas as an operative at Spain’s National Intelligence Center (CNI), which has become the most-watched local Prime Video Original film in Spain in the last 365 days. Dani de la Torre once more directs, with Casas and Luis Zahera returning as leads. “We’re going to let loose: Many more twists, action,” Mario Casas said in Madrid.

* “Si los muertos hablaran” Billed as the first whodunnit from  Spain’s Nacho Velilla, best known as a comedy director (“No Manches, Frida”). Set to shoot this summer between Madrid and Kenya.

* “Mataleón” A new original four-episode true crime series inspired by the murder of politician Isabel Carrasco. Written by Lucía Carballal, Laia Foguet and María Bastarós.

* “Cuando solo quedemos nosotros” Based on Inés Garber’s novel, a series described as a psychological thriller with romantic undertones in which nine strangers find themselves locked in a mansion, forced to take part in a deadly game. Directed by Samantha López (“Todo Arde”) and starring Pau Simón and Judith Fernández.

* “Apocalypse Z: A New World” A sequel to ”Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End,” also produced by Nostromo Pictures, which when it bowed in October 2024, was announced as Prime Video’s most viewed original non-English movie of all time. The second iteration expands the post-apocalyptic universe with more action and an ensemble story and arrives on Prime Video worldwide this Halloween, Prime Video said. Directed by Carles Torrens once again and starring Carlos Alcaide, Julia Martínez, Mónica López, Tamara Casellas and Santiago Vaca Narvaja. The second film will explore facets of the protagonist from other viewpoints, said Torrens. An excerpt screened at Prime Video Presents suggested the scale, high stakes and production ambition of Season 2.

* “Enfrentados: Marfil” The first part of the duology directed by Oscar Pedraza and starring Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego García, which bows on Prime Video this September worldwide. Prime Video Presents screened a steamy but brief scene in a lift between Expósito and García’s characters.

* “Dímelo con besos“ Again, inspired by Mercedes Ron novels, the third and final installment completing the trilogy, ahead of the premiere of the second film “Dímelo en secreto,” arriving in early 2027. The saga is headlined by Alicia Falcó, Fernando Líndez and Diego Vidales. In ‘Dime con besos’ nothing is what it seems,” Ron said at Prime Video Presents..

* “Perfectos Mentirosos” An original film based on Alex Mírez’s novel which has accumulated over 140 million reads on Wattpad. Set to premiere November this year, it is directed by Jesús Colmenar (“Money Heist”) and stars Irene Balmes, Pau Simón and Gleb Abrosimov.
