The Mandalorian and Grogu Knocked to Third at the Box Off...

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu struggled to find success in its second weekend in theaters, resulting in a 69% drop at the box office.

The Disney+ show's transition to the big screen had a domestic haul of $25 million from 4,300 locations in weekend two. That's a significant falloff from its $102 million debut that puts its domestic total at $137 million, while its international box office sits at $109 million ($246 million globally).

The Mandalorian and Grogu attracted audiences with an estimated $165 million global total upon its May 22, 2026, release date. Failure to maintain any sort of momentum suggests die-hard fans mostly showed up for its relatively lukewarm debut weekend just to catch Star Wars' return to theaters. The last time moviegoers traveled to a galaxy far, far away with a big-screen adventure was nearly seven years ago with the launch of Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker.

While Disney failed to rekindle the once-dominating popularity of the franchise, movie watchers still turned out to theaters through the final weekend in May. The Mandalorian and Grogu's soft second weekend put it in third place, domestically, behind low-budget horror projects Backrooms (first) and Obsession (second). The former enjoyed a successful debut weekend through the last three days, while the latter paraded through its third weekend amid strong word-of-mouth.

Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian and Grogu could have marked a return to glory for Star Wars but seems to be coasting through space for now. Its box-office setback suggests Disney is still having a hard time getting audiences to care about theatrical releases for the sci-fi franchise it purchased back in 2012, but there are a few silver linings.

Variety reported that the spin-off movie came in at the low end of Star Wars films with a $165 million budget. That doesn't account for marketing costs, but it's hard to call Din Djarin's big-screen debut a failure at this stage. There's also the fact that The Mandalorian and Grogu will likely pull more eyes its way once it inevitably drops onto Disney+ alongside The Mandalorian show that helped kick off Disney's streaming endeavors back in 2019.

How Much Every Star Wars Movie Made Opening Weekend

Meanwhile, despite some middling reviews from critics (we gave it a 5/10), The Mandalorian and Grogu has still found success from the average Star Wars watcher. While the movie has drawn criticism for its story and characters, there are those online who have praised its action set-pieces and frequent use of practical effects.

IGN ranked all of the Star Wars movies from worst to best and recently added The Mandalorian's theatrical outing to the list. To see what's next for the franchise, you can click here.
