I can still see why some people would want it. Maybe it's a collector's item. Maybe it's a memento. Maybe it's just a little piece of gaming history sitting on a shelf somewhere.

After all, this is probably going to be the biggest game launch of all time. Owning the box for that alone might be enough reason for some people.

But what if you're not interested in any of that?

Well, there's another argument for going physical, and it's a slightly more boring, grown-up one: money.

The global economy isn't exactly in great shape right now. That's probably not going to stop millions of people from buying GTA 6, but an $80 price tag is still enough to make some people pause for thought. At least, that's what Reddit keeps telling me, and Reddit is famously never wrong about anything.

So, should you preorder digitally or physically?

If you're buying digitally, it's simple. Job done. You've secured your copy and don't have to think about it again. But if you're not thrilled about paying $80 today for a game you won't actually be playing until November, a physical preorder through Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, or another retailer might make more sense.

Thanks to preorder guarantees, most retailers won't charge you until your order ships. In other words, you can reserve a copy now and worry about paying for it later.

Is that enough reason on its own to go physical? Maybe, I guess?

One of the biggest reasons I expect GTA 6 preorders to be a lot more manageable than something like the Nintendo Switch 2 launch is simple: it's software.

There isn't a limited Collector's Edition packed with statues and steelbooks that's going to disappear in 30 seconds. There's a Standard Edition and an Ultimate Edition. That's basically it. Everyone is buying one of two versions of the exact same download. Which raises another question: is there actually any rush to preorder at all?

Honestly, if you're planning to go digital, probably not. But, physical is where things get a little more interesting. Rockstar says its "physical" preorders, a term it's playing fairly loose with given the game requires a download anyway, are available "while stock lasts". That suggests there is at least some limit to how many boxed copies are being produced.

Now, whether demand actually exceeds supply is another matter, but it's one of the few arguments in favour of preordering early.

Now, does that mean they'll be impossible to find? Probably not. Does it mean Rockstar has decided on a certain number of plastic cases, printed them all, and called it a day? Possibly.

But if you're the sort of person who absolutely wants a GTA 6 box with a PlayStation or Xbox logo across the top, then maybe lock in your preorder sooner rather than later. Everyone else can probably relax.

At the end of the day, both options get you exactly the same game. The real question is whether you'd rather pay now or later, and whether that box on your shelf actually means anything to you.
